Quick Questions: Assuming I have no complicatons. With the RNY gastric WLS done laproscopically--how long will I have to stay in the hospital. (I am a big baby and I can't stand being away from my cat for more than a day)

Okay....coming from a Sunby/Huepenbecker patient. This is my experience and those around us in our support group. IF...and I express IF you have your surgery done LAP RNY - it will be done most likely be done on a Tuesday and you will be home by Thurs. or Friday at the latest. (Most surgeries are done on Mon or Tuesday). So use that as guide line. IF you have OPEN RNY - you will come home either LATE Friday (which is very unlikely and I say you are nuts for letting them send you home) or Saturday. Possible even Sunday. Given your height/weight I read on your profile sounds like you will be able to have LAP. But I can't express to you enough Betsy there are ABSOLUTELY NO GUARANTEEs you will have it done Laproscopically. I was lucky and had LAP done w/the same drs. you are going threw. However, I did not get to come home till Sat. and that was ONLY because I had my bag packed and said "I'm outta this joint and nothing you can do to keep me." I had been there 5 days. Didn't give a rats behinid that I couldn't pee and said I'm going home. They did talk about keeping me another day. Nope...didn't happen. I wanted to go home. So...if you are ready to go.. You don't have any problems. (If you are healthy and do what they tell yo uto do pre-op you shouldn't have a days bit of problems)... Good Luck. Gala

It really depends on your surgeon and protocol. I have a friend who had lap RNY surgery on a Tuesday, no complications, and she was home on Thursday morning. I had the same surgery (by a different physician and hospital) on Tuesday a.m., no complications, and was discharged on Friday afternoon. The best person to ask would be your surgeon. Sue O.

Betsy: I had open RNY at ST. Marys with Sundby/Huep. on 2/7/05. I had surgery at noon on a Monday and was discharged at noon on Wed. Dr. Sundby was very impressed with my recovery, no complications, etc. I was also self-pay and this saved me a lot of $$$$. Even got back a refund check from St. Marys !!! Good luck and best wishes. Hi Betsy, I had lap RNY at Meriter at 7:30 on Tuesday morning, and I was at home by Thursday at 2:00 p.m. No complications. I'm hoping I'm lucky like Brenda and get some kind of refund--just had my surgery on 8/16/05, so I guess time will tell... All the best with your surgery--my thoughts will be with you. Deb

Betsy, I had Dr. Wallace at Froedtert in Milwaukee for a lap RNY. Surgery was Tues am, I was home by Thurs. pm, off pain meds by Sat. and driving on Monday!! It was much easier to recover from than my hysterectomy 3 years earlier!! Susan
