Just starting out

Hey everyone I guess to begin, I would like to say that I haven't been to a doctor for a physical examination in several years. I haven't had insurance and regular visits to the doctor weren't exactly affordable for me. Anyhow..I started a new job a few months ago and I will be on their health care plan starting next month. Its written by BlueCross/BlueShield of Alabama. Anyhow, I am interested in finding out if surgery would be a good option for me. My BMI is 51 and I am experiencing a lot of lower back and muscle pain as well as fatigue. I have tried excercising but truthfully my back starts hurting so bad that I cannot tolerate the pain. I am only 26 years old and I feel like I am far too young to feel this way. All of this being said, where do I start? I kind of feel like I am on my own here since I just moved recently and don't have a physician that I am used to dealing with. Do you guys have any suggestions for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You sound just like me. I am as well only soon to be 26 years of age yet I feel so horrible due to my weight I have struggled all my life. I am finally came to the decision that I cannot live like this no more. I am still in the process of getting to the point where they will submit to my insurance for my surgery to get done. I have to loose 15 lbs before this will take place which is a struggle for me. My BMI is 51 as well. I cannot wait to get this show on the road. I want to be on the losing side.

Hello, Welcome to the world of WLS! The first response has such good information - that is definitely where you should start. If you live in the Madison area there are at least 3-4 surgeons doing this surgery here. If you look at the finding a doctor page you will also find other in the WI area who do the surgery. One thing you will always find on this page is acceptance and support. We have all been there. I was selfpay and chose to go to Mexico for my lap-RNY just this past 6/13. I am just starting out on the "other side" but I have had such great encouragement from this website! You will find that same support! Best of luck and keep us posted! Renee'
