I am planning to have this surgery and only have 17 1/2 days that I can take off of work. What is the average amount of time it has taken people to go back to work at a desk job?

Hi Meredith, I had open RNY and I am going back to work on Monday....3 weeks off. I have had no complications at all. I hope the best for you. Lori

I will be having lap rny to the best of my knowlegdge. I am 25 years old (almost) and weigh 230ish at 5'2 with a mess of co-morbids, asthma (excercise and illness induced), borderline type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, back/neck pain, pcos, and the big one, sleep apnea. My current plan is to try to have the surgery on a Wednesday and then take the whole following week off. From there perhaps go back to work half days the second week and then full days the third week. Does anyone think this is too rigorous if I do not have complications? I am a tough cookie when it comes to pain, I had a D&C and a diagnostic lap and was out getting a pedicure the same day. The next weekend I was getting married and taking off to Jamaica

I would bet that with no complications you would be ok. I am 41 and have a desk job and wanted to go back after 1 1/2 weeks but my doc said no. Keep us informed. Lori

Which surgery are you having? I have the lap band and only took 1 week off, but really should have taken 2. I believe recovery time is a bit longer with RNY.

I will be having the LAP RNY. It is the only available option for me locally, in Stevens Point. My husband wants me to do this close to home. For a few reasons, like the ease of transport after being released from the hospital and having a place to stay for my family. After reading some people stories on here I was surprised that this has gone so quickly and easily. I started this process December 22, 2004 and so far I have had my psych eval came back good, the sleep apnea dr is on my side, and the dietician seemed understanding. I have my upper endoscopy next Friday, to see if someone who works in a high stress industry has ulcers! NEVER! After that I will be waiting on the insurance company. I have heard Security Health is very good about this sort of thing. According to my doctors office I meet their general qualificatoins and have nothing to worry about. Depending on the insurance company I could have the surgery as soon as April, or as late as August/September and at that point I would probally wait until the end of October.

Hi, I had my surgery on September 2, 2004 and returned to work on September 13. I teach and had the surgery over Labor day weekend, so we already had school off on Monday, so I decided to take the following 4 days too. I was mostly scared about vomiting a lot. I am now 5 months out and haven't vomited once....I really think I could have gone back to school the following Tuesday, but I wasn't sure. I think everyone is different and it really depends on what type of procedure you have. I had Lap. rny. Hope this info. helps! ~Sherry~
