I am almost 4 months out and am down 60lbs. I am writing because I am concerned about the "plateuas" I have encountered so far. I have lost only 20 lbs since my 6 week post op appointment and I am getting discouraged. I know that everyone hits these plateaus but I didn't expect to see them so soon after surgery. I started at 338lbs and am currently at 278lbs. I have been at this weight for 3 weeks, going up and down a pound or two. I am able to eat alot more now than I was only a month ago. Does this mean that my pouch has stretched? Any advice anyone can give on how to get the weight coming off again would be great!

I also had plateaus early on and still do. In the beginning I went 3 weeks without loosing. First of all, remember that your body is probably loosing inches even when the pounds are not coming off. The body has to "catch" up to the weight loss sometimes. Also, if you increase your protein and water intake that might help as well. I lost most of my 97 lbs in the first 6 months. In the past 6 months I have lost maybe 15 lbs so I know it is discouraging. As long as you feel good, eat right and get your protein, water and exercise in, it will all come together in the end. Try not to look at the scale and look at the inches gone as well. I don't believe the pouch can stretch that early on, unless you have been overeating. If you have been eating to much, you would be in pain alot of the time from eating to much. I know that I now can eat more than I could in the beginning and they do expect that as well, but I think your suppose to be later in the journey. (about 6-12 months out) Give it some time and hang in there. I am sure it will get better. Vicky

Hi Heather. I am almost five months out and I am experiencing the same thing. I am down 68lbs and asked my Dr about this problem yesterday. He said, "No your pouch doen't stretch but, the connection from your pouch to your small intestine will get wider and food can easily pass thru in this stage of your recovery". Therefore, just because you maybe hungrier and eating more, your pouch won't 'stretch'. I also was getting hungrier between meals, (I was eating about 4-6 oz per meal) He suggested to increase that to no more than 8oz per meal. Lay off the breads/pasta. And, stick to protein and veggies/fruits. Also, don't snack between meals. If your eating more at your meal this will possibly take care of your plateau. Exercise is key too. Increase it to five days a week. Good luck !! 248/180 :0
