Just waiting for my date

Yesterday i got a call from my surgeons nurse. She told me she had gotten the approval from my insurance and that the hospital will be calling me to set up my surgery date. Now i'm getting nervous and excited. It is finally going to happen. Any suggestions for the protein drink that I am going to need to get?

I stocked up on a multi-vitamin/mineral/protein shake before my surgery. What a mistake that was! I quickly got tired of it, and ended up giving it away to a peer. If you are going to stock up on anything, here are my suggestions: 1. just 1 can of a vitamin/mineral/protein shake 2. broth 3. jello/pudding You'll be eating more solid foods after a short while, so only buy what you need for the week each week, then see how you feel and what your body will tolerate. It took me about a year of experimenting with foods to figure out what I could/could not tolerate. I am 2 years post op and I still can not tolerate: alcohol, steak/beef (except ground beef in small amounts), and milk Everyone is different, so listen to your body.

Hi Judy, Make sure your surgeon uses protien drinks. Mine prefers we get our protien through food...if at all possible. He's not too worried about us getting in 60 grams initially. There are several sites and companies where you can order sample sizes rather than a whole canister. Also, after surgery your tastes may change. Pre-op, I would make up a couple different kinds of soup and freeze small amounts (1/8 to 1/4 cup). I got sick of the canned broths real fast. Friends came to my rescue and brought me small containers of broth. Another early food was bean soup. Again, a friend made a pot and brought me a small container that lasted for days. I have enough sugar free jello to last me for life. I ate it for the first two weeks and now can't even look at the stuff. Guess what I want to say is...don't stock up on much. Tastes changes and you may not be able to tolerate some things. I'm one year out and can eat most anything. Scrambled eggs still don't go down well and many fried foods, yet I can eat steak and pork chops with no problem. Individual differences. Congratualtions by the way! Lori Ann

Hi Judy- You'll be on a liquid diet before your surgery and they will tell you exactly what to do. I believe the pre-op liquid diet is more of equal amounts of carb/protein where after surgery you'll be on a lower carb, higher protein supplement. The Surgeon's office and dieticians will help you through it. If not, please feel free to email me at [email protected] . You've got an excellent surgeon! He's the greatest! I can't say enough positive things about him! Lori Watson Schumann Lap RNY 12-13-02 started at 283 now 145lbs
