Sharney, I am now 1 yr out. I can have small treats and soda. However I don't crave it and sometimes is doesn't even taste good. The most soda I have is one can a day if that. I used to drink 5-6 cans of soda a day before surgery. I still get some cravings for sweets, but my stomach does not allow me to eat a lot. They are few and inbetween on both of these. The carbonation in the soda is why they tell you not to drink it. I am now done 136 pounds and feel wonderful..Deb

Hi Sharnae, There are a lot of different options out there for wls. You might want to check out all the surgery forums to see which is right for you. I'm pre-op, but am having BPD/DS July 13th. You don't get dumping syndrome with that procedure. Read all you can on every surgery type and then decide. Good luck! Denise

Sharnae, I had my surgery on March 31st and most of the stuff you were told is not true. There is a wonderful life waiting for you after this surgery. No matter what, everyone is different. I have taken sips of soda since surgery and find it too sweet. I cant have artificial sweeteners so diet soda is out. The carbonation is hard to take, especially right after surgery. I have a friend who had the surgery. she opens a soda and lets it sit in her refigerator until the carbonation is gone. Then she drinks it. I do, however, eat sweets. Not as often or as much as I used to. It now takes me 3-4 days to eat a small bag of M&Ms, instead of doing it all at one time. My tastes have changed where I dont crave the sweets as much, and that helps. Meats may be hard to digest as well. I was able to eat pork finally and hamburger (I am 12 weeks post) but I have not tried steak or beef roast yet. Maybe this weekend. For some people, this is exactly what they are looking for (it was for me) and if you have a positive attitude, it can work for you as well. Anne
