can't quite decide what to do
I am 2 weeks out from my lapascropic bypass and I feel great. It is a personal choice. My surgeon only performs y en rout because he says it is the most advanced surgery and he prefers not to putting a foreign item (the band) into the body. The body tends to heal easier with the rny from what I have read. I was home in 2 days and he even took out my gallbladder. Good luck, whatever you decide.

Hi Debra,
My sister had the RNY gastric bypass but when it was my turn to choose... I opted for the Lap Band. I chose the Lap Band over the RNY because it is adjustable... removable if need be and it doesn't change my anatomy or the way my body absorbs nutrients. I know that my weight-loss will be slower but the short-term and longterm risks are also lower with this procedure. My surgeon is very pro-banding and I have found that each doctor will give a different spin on each WLS depending on their preference. I also chose the Lap Band because I watched my sister go through a very difficult recovery and I was not up for the type of pain and emotional changes she went through. With my procedure I will probably go home the same say of my surgery and both my husband and daughter are much more comfortable with the decreased risk factors with this surgery.
The fast weight-loss with the bypass is very alluring but I think it is important to remember that the success of both types of surgery are the same 2 years post-op. I guess it comes down to which path seems right for you because eventually they are both equally effective in the long run. I like knowing I can have an effective WLS without disrupting the way my body was intended to absorb the nutrients it needs. Slow is okay with me as I am more concerned about the the loss being permanent than quick...
Wishing you the best with whichever procedure you and your surgeon decide upon!

Debra,
I had a RNY on March 31st in Wausau by Dr. Weiland. Let me tell you now, he is wonderful. I had very little pain, only small scars and his staff is incredible. They are so good with any questions you may have.
My stay in the hospital was minimal (36 hours) and I feel wonderful. I am 12 weeks post and have lost almost 50 pounds already. It is wonderful. I can walk without getting winded, I can play with my kids and I did the one thing I told myself I would do if I lost enough weight - I joined a karate class.
This surgery is not for everyone, but it was the right choice for me. I am 35 and look the best I have in several years.
Have a positive attitude and see if there is a support group in your area. They are wonderful for providing the support you may be looking for.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. I will answer any questions you may have.
