Long Term Effects
Help,
I am scheduled for surgery next Thursday, and this morning one of my long time friends called and begged me not have the surgery. She stated that I don't know the long term effects and what problems I will have 4-5 years down the road. I thought I was knowledgable on most of it, however, there is no really long term data out there. Am I missing some big information that I should know about?? I was ok up until now.. Is this a sign?? Now I don't know what to do..
I haven't had surgery yet, but am hoping to later this summer (I have to get my BMI down to 60 - my surgeon only does laproscopic). Anyway, I don't know that I've ever heard anything negative about down the road; however, you could look on the anniversary link and check with some of the folks listed there - perhaps they could help answer your question. Meanwhile, I'll be praying that all goes well. I've wanted to have this surgery for the last five years. I can't believe it is now within the realms of possibility for me. Don't give up on your dream just because of what one friend says. Keep in mind that a lot of people will tell you anything negative they can think of and not so much out of concern for your health, but because they don't know how they'll be able to accept the new you. This is not cosmetic surgery. If that is your reason for having the surgery - think again. If, like most of us, you are doing it to improve your health and possibly save your life, go for it. Prove your friend wrong. I highly recommend you talk to folks who are several years post-op and to your surgeon and support group as well.

I had surgery on April 19,2004 and to this date I have lost 80lbs. I'm off all of my meds. some meds I was on for 25 yrs. I had mixed feeling after I had the surgery done. But I tell you I would do it again in a heart beat. I feel so good now compared to 8 weeks ago. I talked to a lady on Thursday night that had this type of surgery done 25 yrs. ago. She advised that she lost 150lbs. in the first year and has been able to keep it of until about 1 yr. ago when she quit smoking. She said that she has gained about 20lbs. back. Said that the weight gain doesn't bother her as long as she could stop smoking. All in all she said that she doesn't regret getting the surgery done because it has helped her for the last 24 yrs. now! Thought this info might help! Jim
I am 2 weeks out of surgery ( lapascropic). One reason why I choose my surgeon was it is a comprehensive long-term program. I will be going to his office every month for the 1st six months and at every 1 yr anniversary for 5 years. He also has a support group that meets once a month, with people at different stages pre-op and post-op. I feel absolutely great and I was home in 2 days. You should feel absolutely comfortable calling and asking questions to your surgeons staff. According to all the info I have it is a long-term tool to permanent weight-loss and good health. Many family and friends only hear the 2 minute profile on the news on this procedure and are fearful. It is best to get informed and inform your friend, based on what your doctor tells you.
