How do I deal with my childs reaction to the surgery?

I have two sons age 10 and 14. My 14 yr thinks the idea of this surgery is great, he can't wait for mom to be able to do stuff with him again. My 10 yr is certain I'm going to die and although I have tried to convice him my risks of not having the surgery are greater, he says that is a chance we will have to take. He is very upset and begs me not to have the surgery. Anyone have any similar problems or any ideas?

Hi Jeanette, I am in the process of being approved for Lap Band surgery and have an 11yr old daughter. SHe worries as well which is one of the reasons I chose the Lap Band as opposed to the RNY. THe risks are much lower and the longterm results are similar to the gastric bypass. My husband and myself and my daughter are all in support of the WLS I chose. I know I will lose weight slower but I am fine with that. My sister had the RNY GBP a year and a half ago and lost a huge amount of weight in a very short time period and looks wonderful... however... she is now gaining and is considering joining weigh****chers as she is scared to death of gaining the weight back. As time goes on she has less and less dumping when she eats naughty foods. I guess I have watched her and decided that I would rather have less risk and the adjustablility of the band in the longterm. I also like the fact that the way my body absorbs nutrients is not changed. Anyhoo... don't know if that helps at all... good luck with everything... Darcy
