IS THIS AMOUNT OF DRAINING NORMAL???
it has been 5 days since surgery, and i am home, and the ONLY concern i have is the Blake drain. the stuff coming out in the tube looks ok, but i am worried about the stuff that leaks around, and gets on the bandage. it seems like alot. I have to change that dressing every 8 hours cuz it is soaked. and it soaks through to my binder i have to wear. Is that normal or am i just being over worried? My mom said i need to lay done and rest more, maybe i am over doing it, and i need to rest.
How much drainage did everyone else have? I rather ask you all becuse you have gone throu this and are understanding. Thanks
Tanya,
I went home with two drains after surgery. When you say "soaked", do you really mean "soaked"? I do not think that is normal, and I would recommend you calling your surgeon asap to inquire further. Does the drain seem secure to you?? The drainage should be going into the bulb of the drain, not leaking out around it.
Please check into that! I agree that you may need to rest a bit more, but still there should not be that amount of drainage on your dressings.
Take care and keep us posted!

Thanks Traci!!
I did call and have an appointment. They told me REST. And Yesterday afternoon i basicly locked myslef into my room, and only allowed someone in every other hour to bring me fresh water. (kids are great!!!) I feel better today, still in pain, but feel better. They didn't seem too worried about the drainage because i do not have a fever. But thanks for your advise and help. That is why i love this website, , everyone cares and helps each other!! It is a beautiful thing!!
It does drain in the drain bulb, and that is the normal drainage(kinda lite pinkish) but what is on the bandage is like puss, and i used pads (yes like maxi pads) cut in half, and then a slit cut for the drain tube, and it will soak throu that and on my binder. I have called and left a message for the doctor, because my mom has a fear of staff infection (she thinks that f something will go wrong it will with me) I am emptying that bulb 3 times a day, and emptying like 30 or 40 ml each time. That area does seem to be sorer then before. I just thought this would all go smoother having the lap done
