I am a 53 year old female who has been fat most of my life. I have my informational session 4/12 with Dr. Wasco in Neenah. I would like to hear from other women my age as to how the recovery was for them and how you dealt with the issue to the eating-or doesn't it seem to matter because one is so happy to be actually losing weight?

Hi Judith, First of all let me congratulate on your decision to have this life altering surgery! I am only 12 years your junior and had the open RNY surgery done 5 months ago. The absolute best advice I can give is to prepare yourself physically for this. Begin your 'new' healthy lifestyle before your surgery. I began walking about 4 months before my surgery and started on the vitamins then. I also quit smoking 3 months before. It all made a world of difference in my recovery. Only 2 days after surgery, I was up and walking around town again. I had a reasonable amount of pain the first day, but it got better quickly after that. I wish you the best of luck and hope for an uneventful surgery and speedy recovery.

Well, I haven't made the decision. I am still looking into it. My frustration comes from my inability to lose wt, despite trying for years and years. I have been maintaining a 30 lb wt loss for the last 18 months but can't get beyond it. Truth be told-I am not following the WW program longer than a few days-then off-then on again. I am in probably good shape for my weight-I don't smoke, I walk a mile every day, and already take vitamins. My concern is that with my auto-immune disorder, I won't be able to walk by the time I am 60 if I don't lose weight now.

Judith~ I had open RNY at the Bariatric treatment center in Belvidere, Ill on March 9th,2004. I am only one week out and I am doing great. This was the best gift I could have ever given myself. My advice to you is WALK, WALK,WALK. At BTC they have you up and walking four hours after your surgery. Let me tell you it was not easy. But do it. If you walk you will recover much faster. I am only 24 but I have a few friends that are in thier 40's and 50's that have done very well. If you are at all concerned or scared after your informational session, I would highly recommend you looking into BTC. Good luck on your new weightloss journey. Heather
