Can't Take it Anymore
Ok it has been 2 weeks and 3 days since my surgery. My nut only gave me three days of sample menus which I have been eating this whole time..It has now gotten to the point that I am so sick of eating the same crap over and over that I have found that I am barely even eating anymore. Suppose to have 3 meals a day and I think I am doing maybe 2....On top of that there is the protein...before I left the hospital my nut and coordinator gave me a bag of protein samples. Probably about 20+ different kinds of protein drinks...THEY ARE DISGUSTING!! either they are way too sugary, way to gritty, or the flavor is so gross it makes me gag...So in another words have not been drinking my protein...Then the vitamins....I have been taking my flinestones but the taste of them has changed dramatically from before surgery and they taste super bitter..I got the Citracal petites and they said they need to be crushed..I tried it 3 times once in a beverage, once in applesauce, once it oatmeal..but having to take four of them a day makes whatever I put them in super chalky and again it is making me gag. As for iron haven't even tried what I got cause I think the pharmacist gave me the wrong kind cuz its coated and doesnt crush very well...Not sure what kind to get...
I see my nut on Monday and my surgeon on Tues..I have lost at least 26 lbs since surgery but am soo damn hungry and dont know what I can have aside from the three day sample menu they gave me. I was told I would be on pureed the first month and have tried the baby food meat and that is disgusting and again the gag reflex. I don't know what to do I feel I am starving myself..
Oh also during my stay at the hospital I was given Heprin shots to avoid blood clots. I have developed HUGE bruises in the areas they can me the shots and they are not going away..They actually seem to get getting bigger and darker..My mom told me last night she watched something on 20/20 where someone who help make the medicine poisoned it and people have died from it and got very sick...So now she has me freaked out that the Heprin I received was tainted....
Please give me some advice on what I can eat at this stage and what I can do about my protein and vitamins....I feel as if I have no energy and all I want to do is sleep!

Wow. The first thing I notice in your letter is a very negative tone. Did you research and educate yourself as much as possible about the surgery before hand? Did you try different proteins and foods? Well too late for that now. I think the first thing should be to take a deep breath and be thankful you made it through the surgery. The next step would be to allow yourself time to find some more palatable foods and shakes. Is there a support group at your hospital? Or maybe in your area? Maybe visiting some others who have had the surgery can help you get more ideas. I am so sorry you are feeling this way, but this is a VERY radical surgery and it requires lots of research, trial and error and patience. You may want to call you doctor too if you are concerned about your medicine but please, talk to someone face to face in your area. Good Luck.
Hi!
I had Heparin shots too in the hospital. And I had HUGE bruises in every location they gave me a shot. It took a REALLY long time for mine to go away (like 6 weeks!). They stayed really dark for a long time then VERY slowly faded away. I wouldn't worry too much. You can always ask your doc when you go in tho if you are really worried about it.
This is just my experience, but my doctor & nut never wanted me to try to get in extra protein with shakes, etc or all the vitamins that you describe that early out. I was told not to worry about the protein until you are eating semi-solid to solid food- that they want all the protein I get to be from food. I am only taking 2 chewable vitamins (Centrum has a good orange flavored adult chewable) a day. That's it. Doc says we'll worry about the rest later after things stabilize and I'm getting enough water, etc. I'm 11 weeks out this week. I am going to see my surgeon next week for my 3 mo checkup and I'm sure it'll all change for me then.
So, if I was you, I wouldn't sweat over these things so early out.
I hear you about the gag reflex... I have a REALLY bad one! I gag thinking about gagging!
I think at 2 or 3 weeks out I was just starting cottage cheese, pudding, mashed potatoes, etc. You can have anything with the texture of the food in your sample meals... use your imagination. I sure know it's hard when you're gaggy.
Take care,
Tammy

Thanks for both of your responses. I guess my frusteration got the better of me and I stressed too much about the small things. Saw the nut today and she gave me a few other options for food as well as different vitamins to try as well as protein..Next payday I will get these items and see if it works any better. So as of this point I am feeling better and still glad that I had the surgery. Alos hubby was a genius and got creative with some beef gravy, hamburger and mashed potatoes..Now I got something that I like to eat for a few more days. Thanks again for your responses and support.
