Hi Donna,
I started my liquid diet and clear liquids on June 18th and had surgery on 7/9. I am starting to feel human but I had a couple of glitches (fever, not being able to get rid of the cathether).
One of the coordinators at Bariatric Institute just called me today and I liken this to a baby. I thought back to when I introduced food to my only daughter who is now 22 (and luckily for her, she does not have the issues I do--sometimes I don't know how that happened but I'm grateful).
My high weight was 407 on June 18th and I was 382 on surgery day. You may not see much of a loss after you get out of the hospital (surgical gases, excess iv fluids) but don't give up.
Bread and pasta won't go away--they will still be there when you are able to handle them.
When I was on the pre op diet, mine was full liquid and clear liquid for 2 days. I was craving Famous Dave's bbq chicken (no other kind, just that one - lol). Then I wanted a crisp salad with chicken, low fat cheese and light 1000 Island.
What is hard is when you are at work and people bring food in. You just get around it by saying you'll catch it later and later never comes.
This is a journey that will last for a long time which is something you have to keep in mind. Do you have a support group nearby? I had to go to one and wasn't able for time reasons to get to others. Talking to others that are either going thru post op or pre op that are not that far out may help too.
I look forward to hearing from you and seeing your progress. Are you in the Milwaukee area?
Sylvia

Hello Sylvia,
I am in the Appleton area but travel to the other side of Milwaukee to visit my sister.
I think that the clear liquid diet would be so hard to do, but I suppose that right now with only a week out you really don't feel like food do you or am I wrong? My highest was 260 (and I am only 5'1) and was weighed today at the Dr.'s office and I am 253, my home scale appears to be off a bit. My daughter had an open RNY about 3 yrs ago, her highest weight was 315, she is now 167 and gaining. She abuses her tool, I have tried talking to her about but she's 28 so she knows more than I do. She lives with me right now so she has been stuck eating my way for the past week and a half. Even got a protein drink down her last night.
Anyways I got a list today of different support groups in the area so I am going to try to get one in next week. Its a shame we don't live closer so we could go together to them. The journey is always more fun when you have a freind to tag along.......lol
I had the H lori test today, the one where you blow into a bag, it went well and recieved all my dates and times for the rest of my appointments and all.
Well I suppose I am just ramblin on and on now. I will talk with you later. Have a wonderful weekend and keep me posted as to how you are doing and I will do the same.

Hi Donna,
Your daughter (if you can get her to do it) should see her surgeon asap to get the gain under control. In reviews of my surgeon and even when I went in to see him for the first time, I didn't get the feeling that I was being judged which is sometimes the feeling I get from my PCP though I do like him. Even with that, he was instrumental to me getting my surgery because he was one of the recommendations that brought it over the top.
The liquid diet (I'm on full liquids but according to my surgeon's nutritionist (nut as abbre) isn't bad but I am starting to get to the point where I want to chew something. I have been chewing gum and spitting it out so I don't forget how (lol)
I know what you mean--I'd love to go with you and your daughter and she should get to a group where she can find peers her own age (my daughter is 22 and luckily has a bmi of 24--I don't know how I did that). Between the surgeon and a peer group, that may help. Possibily being reminded of the road she traveled to get to where she is may help too.
Let me know how you and your daughter are doing too.

Hi Sylvia,
I had my surgery on 6/24, so I will be 5 wks on Tuesday. I was never on a full-liquid diet per se. I mean pureed yes, but not if I had eggs, cottage cheese, tuna, fish or other soft foods. I did eat too fast on one occasion without chewing well and that came right back up. My requirements are 60 - 80 grams of protein/day & 64+ fluid ounces. It is suggested to have 30g of protein from a powder/shake and I do unjury chocolate.
So far, so good. Hope you are doing well.
Sandy

Hi Sandy,
I went on a liquid diet, clear liquids, back to full liquid (with sfree pudding, cream of wheat, pureed soup and yogurt) (that was at the hospital and continued until my 2 week follow up on Thursday of last week. From 6/18 (when I went on my prep diet****il now, I have lost 35 pounds. My schedule is seeing the nurse and dietitican in another few weeks and the dr in 3 months.
I am now on pureed food (protein vegys, fruit, meat) with a goal of 60 grams of protein per day and at least 48 oz of sugar free fluids (sfree popsicles, water, crystal light, etc)
I will be going back to work on Wednesday (3 weeks from surgery date which didn't make my boss happy because I was going to try less than 2 weeks--very dumb but the nurses at my surgeon's office talked me out of that one). I had some complications (oxygen levels after surgery, fever the day I was to go home and urinary issues) which resulted in another day at Elmbrook Memorial.
I did attempt to eat scrambled eggs without pureeing and they came right back up. Lesson learned-you have to do this at least once I think.
The more you look at it like a rebirth (my surgery was July 9th and my 53rd birthday was July 3rd so for me it was), it is just like a baby's stomach. You keep track of what agrees with you and what doesn't. This is a journey.
Keep in touch.
