Has anyone here had experience with COBRA and WLS? I just got my consult with the surgeon middle of this week and got layed off today. Will COBRA cover what my old insurance did? Will they even let me have the surgery if I an under COBRA? Anyone with info or experience please respond. Thanks in advance.

With federal COBRA it is just an extention of your current benefits.  Do your current benefits allow for RNY?  Then so should your cobra.  I work at an ins. co and half of my day is enrolling members on to COBRA coverage, we do not have a special "cobra" plan we put the members on. HOWEVER.. you will want to check with your former employer because they CAN opt to have a seperate plan for their cobra members. That separate plan may not include WLS.   My first suggestion is to call your insurance company and ask the following questions.  "I am thinking of electing COBRA with my former employer, can you please tell me if they offer a separte plan for their cobra members? Or is is just an extention of your current benefits? Are there any changes with limitations or exclusions?" If they tell you they offer a separate plan for cobra then ask to see if the RNY is covered. It would also be worth your while to ask when the employers renewal is. Many times they (employers) will change plans at renewal time. If your employer has renewal in July.. they may be switching plans, so its important to remember what MAY be covered may change at renewal. This does not mean that all groups change their benefit plan.. many stay the same.. but they do have the option to do so. I hope this helps!! If you decide to keep on with COBRA, please always be sure to keep your payments current so you do not get terminated for Non payment. Also keep records of your payment in case you get accidently termed or in case your employer loses your payment (I've seen it happen!) Good Luck and keep us posted!!

Is this surgery outlined in your policy? If it is not.. you may be fighting a losing battle with insurance.
