I've been tossing around the idea of gastric bypass or lap-band for a while, and finally went to a seminar on Dec 10th in Neenah at ThedaClark. I've been hemhawing about going to see one of the doctors, because I'm really nervous about the prospect of surgery. But, I also think about the good that will come out of it, so thats what make me keep going back and forth.  I finally called today and set up an appointment with Dr. Georgen at Midwest Bariatric Center. Going to see him on the 14th of January. Hopefully it goes good, and I hope he can answer alot of my questions and put some fears to rest.  I found out that my insurance wont cover Lap-band, but they will cover Roux-En Y. So I've thought that over alot in the last month too. But I'm doing research on RNY and think that is possibly the best option for me.  Are there any diabetics out there that have had this surgery? I'd like to know how you are doing with it now. I'm sick of the insulin and medications, so hopefully this surgery will help.  Plus its going to make the weight come off REAL quick, compared to lap-band. I'm really excited, but really nervous too.  Sorry for rambling!!

I have diabetes and had the lap RNY on 11/13.  I was on pills and 2 shots a day, now nothing - no shots, no pills.  Just the recommended vitamins.  Plus my pcp would not recommend it unless I had the RNY because he said it's best for diabetics.  Keep researching and don't do anything until you feel comfortable with your choice. Good luck, Debi

Hello, I wasn't diabetic so I can't relay any personal info.  But a friend, that had surgery 6 weeks before me, was.  She went into the hospital on I think 11 pills a day and came out with barely any.   There is a certain day of the week that Dr. Wasco and Georgen work together on surgeries and I was lucky enough to have that.  Both of them were great.  They visited with me right before surgery to make sure I was ok and then both came to see me each morning that I was in and so did their NP Betsy.  My visit appointment with Dr. Wasco after surgery needed to be moved and instead of having a receptionist call to do it Wasco made the call personally, I thought that was great.   Good Luck and go to the support meetings, even if you aren't sure about having surgery yet the people are great to listen too. Hi Musicman, I had surgery last Feb. I was taking 100 units of insulin daily. When I went on the pre op diet I was able to cut that in half and I stopped taking my insulin shortly after surgery. My numbers were not perfect but I was worried about a low and not being able to take care of it. But the numbers were not high either...usually between 140 to 150. At six month I had my A1C done and my number was wonderful-4.9. My fasting have been between 75 and 90 and night number under 120. I did this big time for my diabetes. I should point out though I had a different surgery-VSG. 80% of my stomach was removed and no bypass of the intestines. From all that I have read about RNY you should have a way better chance of being off all your diabetes meds!  I hope your meeting went well and maybe things are moving forward for you. It is very exciting and wonderful to go on this journey to a more healthier you! Hugs Cathy
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
