Lap Band or rou Y? need opinions
Hi Romie, I'm pre-op, but this is a great question. There is also lots of information on this website on all of the different WLS's.
Hope you find what you are looking for. I am personally going with the RNY, from what I've seen you don't lose as much with the Lap Band (from what I've seen). There are probably those that have though.
Again, Good luck!
Pam
Thank you for your thoughts, I am also pre-op. I was told I would be ready to go within 2-3 months so I have to make up my mind before then, lol I know you lose weight more with the full gastric, but the thought of it being permanent gives me pause. But I am a procrastinator by nature (which is why I need to lose weigh, lol) so having to go in to get readjusted all the time also makes me think. So I wanted people's experiences to help me make up my mind
Good question Romie. I can't tell you about the lapband. I had a RNY 7 months ago. My insurance didn't pay for the lapband so it was a no brainer for me. If I had to choose, I would have went with the RNY anyway. I wanted a guaranteed weight loss that did not require me to use self-control -- which I do not have when it comes to food. My impression of the lapband is that you can still eat anything you want and you don't have any problems with being able to have sugar and fat like you do with RNY. I'm not sure if that's true. It's my impression of it. Sugar and fat are my downfall. If my pouch wasn't such a grouch, I would still eat chips and donuts and the heck with protein. So RNY and its forced "bad" food avoidance is perfect for me.
Life is so much easier now that I'm not carrying that extra 85 pounds around with me. I am healthier than I've been for a really long time. I have enough energy to do whatever I want for hours and hours without resting. And I can fit into regular size clothes and I look pretty good in them. I could go on and on.
There have been rough times especially at the beginning. I had open RNY and I got an infection in my incision. That made for a difficult first month or so. It took a while to figure out what I can and cannot eat. I've had head hunger when my stomach was full. Those are all things I had to deal with one by one. There are still times when I give in and have something I shouldn't then my pouch gets grumpy. I guess its a good thing because it stops me from eating the wrong things.
So, yes, things are going well now that have the rules figured out. OH has helped a lot with that. And, yes, I would do it again, twice if I had to.
Hi Romie,
i had rny gastric bypass , i was not given an option . i know people who have been successful with the rny gbs . from what i hear , see and experienced rny gbs is the best way to go as far as lasting results (if you follow the rules of the pouch) . i have heard from another forum i am on that alot of lap banders end up getting rny gbs because you dont lose as much weight . an example ,randy jackson from american idol had the lap band and he did lose some weight but has gain alot back . so without doubt or hesitation i would strongly recommend rny gbs . gl .

HI Romie:
I had Lap Band surgery on Jan. 9 of this year. Tomorrow I will be 4 months post-op and so far I have lost 75 lbs. Now, my surgery did tell me that I've lost as much as most lap banders do in a year; however, I've worked very hard. I'm at the gym 3-4 days a week, for 1 1/2 hours each day. I love my band and if I had to do it all over again, I would go the same route. I had to pay for my surgery myself as my insurance absolutely refused even though my doctor told them I was on the verge of a heart and a stroke. But they said they couldn't worry about the what if's. Good luck on your decision and I hope all works well for you!!
