some people and their unwanted advice

I'm trying not to be annoyed but I had my knee surgery today and was talking to the very nice young nurse that had taken care of me when I was in there 28 days ago for the other knee. I had asked her if she had known anyone that had WLS, and one of the other nurses stepped into my curtained area and started telling me that she knew someone that had lost 100# by eating a tsp a food a day after their surgery and then started eating more and more and then gained 150# back - she was telling ME it it's "more or less it's just how you eat and how much and that the surgery isn't really the deal". I really wanted to ask her if she'd ever been heavy in her life and ever tried to "get thinner" and had people talk about you. I was good and ignored her and she "went away" - - how much of that does a person have to put up with!!!! I also found out with todays knee surgery that my weight is affecting my knees....Which I was kind of figuring these days. What gives with those types of people anyway! I'm glad that if I get to have the WLS surgery it won't be there!

Congratulations Wendy! You've just suffered through one of many insensitive morons who either "have a friend who knew someone", or "I saw something on tv", or "I read about someone" and now consider themselves the top professional for idiotic advice! But, on the bright side, there are many more of them out there and I think they travel in groups! They may even seek eachother to reproduce! Seriously, don't believe too much of what you hear or read or see on tv. My best advise is to listen to your doctor, dietician and your body. Even some advise on the message boards are bogus in my view. I would never think of drinking soda because of the many bad things about it and what can happen to me and my VBG surgery. However, many people continue to drink it and their doctors supposedly say it's okay. So, believe less than 1% of what those know-it-all's say, and go with the ones you trust. I hope you have a speedy recovery and can join the millions of people who have successfully had WLS and are living a happier, healthier life. You'll be with us soon! I know it!!

Hi Wendy, went through the same stuff you're going through! Just let them talk and weigh everything with a grain of salt. When one of the girls in our group was in the hospital having her surgery an x-ray tech gave her a hard time about even having her RNY. Have a great holiday season. Just me, Pattie
