Diet before surgery?
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone had to go on a diet before their surgery. My surgeon, Dr. Flum of UW Medical Ctr, said he requires his patients go on a 1000 calorie/day diet to shrink the liver before surgery. The thing is he didn't tell me exactly when to start this diet, he just told me the range he's given previous patients. I've talked to my surgery coordinator, she referred me to the nutritionist and I'm still waiting to hear back from her. In the meantime, I thought I'd put this out there to the knowledgeable folks of OH, particularly anyone whose surgeon is Dr. Flum. My surgery is just less than a month from now, so I'm thinking I need to start this diet soon. Any tips on the what foods you ate is also appreciated. Thanks in advance for any info. Meka
Hi,
I went through the WISH Center and they place patients on a practice diet--6 small meals a daily to get you, the patient, adjusted to the new feeding program after surgery. There were also some limits on what could be consumed during this time, and lots of water to drink.
I was not put on a liquid diet 2 weeks before surgery, but that may be something they do case-by-case.
Thank you all for your replies! The nutritionist called me back and told me to start a Slim Fast and frozen dinner diet (healthy choice or weigh****chers) on June 1st, 3 weeks before my surgery. It's gonna be a lil rough only drinking shakes and eating frozen dinners, but I will do it! Again, thank you for your replies and emails. Meka
