Hi Cindy I had a lap .I'm doing ok there still is a little pain but not so that I have to take any meds for it. The gas they used durning surgery hurts more but thats gone now also. My hardes part was trying to get comfortable in that dam hospital bed .Sorry I don't know much about an open. Hopes this helps.
Welcome, Cindy!! When are you going to have surgery at the Wish Center? I was just approved on Monday and haven't scheduled my surgery yet. I think I am going to wait until January so I will have double insurance coverage (my hubby is switching to Regence, too). Dr. Hunter with Virginia Mason is who I am having do my lap RNY. He is also in Federal Way.
Good luck and Congrats!

Hi Cindy!
I am 15 days out from open RNY. Many things are not as bad as you think they might be. The pain is definitely controllable. I have more incision pain than anything. I have not needed pain meds for over a week now, so that is getting better. The biggest thing I have noticed is that I really had NO IDEA what they meant by taking Vitamins and drinking protein for the rest of your life. That is by far, the hardest part of all of this. The main reason is, you do not feel hungry, so its hard to think about putting things in your tummy. I am told it gets much better, so I'm sure it does. I have lost a total of 20 pounds in two weeks, so that is very cool. I hope that helps a little.

Hi Cindi, and Welcome.
I'm 14 mo. post and I also had lap RNY with Dr. A. and have great respect for him and his team. I also thought Valley Medical was the best place to be.
The pain was doable, but I didn't expect to gain 20#s in the hospital, I'm not sure if that is more common in Lap than open, but it may have something to do with all the fluids and gas they pump in ya.
My advice would be to do as they say, walk, walk, walk, as soon as you can. It seemed to help with the gas after Lap. Oh, and I've said this before many times, but while at Valley, visit the Garden area, that was my favorite place to be.
Good luck to you, and you won't regret this.
If I can help, drop me a line, I'd love to chat.
