-Just wondering if anyone knows what type of surgery Madigan is offering now that has greater malabsorptive then the RNY. As I was leaving Meg's office she mentioned it but know that I have been researching the DS and feeling that would be best for me I am not really sure if that was it or not.
I can call tomorrow and find out, but am just feeling a little inpatient to find out.
If anyone has insight into this I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Michele

Hi Michelle,
I completed the pathway at MAMC and had Lap converted to Open RNY.  My really good friend's husband is a surgeon at MAMC and says at this time, they only do RNY both lap and open, VSG and Lap band.  Your doing the right thing be researching what is best for you and your lifestyle.  This is not a quick fix, but a tool and a life altering one at that.

Good luck!
Michelle

Michelle,

Thank for the input.

It was Meg Volker (SP?) that just told me there is a Dr. that is doing a surgery other then those you and I mention. I saw her a week ago Friday. -Must be something new.

Maureen,
I am sure you are excited and nervous at the same time. I am excited for you, you are so close.
If you asked that would be great. I do plan on trying to call today, but once I get to work I am not sure how easy that will be.
I guess I should be writing down my questions as well, as I have many also, but do not write them down when I think of them.
Well, I must be off to work,
Best of Luck today,
Michele

hey, Maureen!

It's never too late in the game to learn more. I encourage you to explore *all* your options, and then make the best decision for yourself and your cir****tances... even if that means delaying your surgery date or switching surgeons.

I have arthritis, so the ability to continue with my anti-inflammatories was essential to my decision to have the DS instead of the RNY. I'd also been living with an RNY-type pouch for over 20 years (I had a VBG... an old "stomach stapling" ... in 1987), and I loved the idea of being able to eat more normally.

But please educate yourself in all your options. You're the one living with the surgery after you're discharged. Your body, your health, your post-op quality of life.

The DS isn't for everyone, and you may well find that it's not for you. But you really should find that out, now. Think twice, cut once!

Best of luck whatever you decide!!

Kathy

Hey Kathy,
Thanks for the advice and the encouragement---

Part of the reason that I decided to go with the VSG was that I prefer the idea of it to the RNY then I found out that if it does not produce the weight lose that you were hoping for that you can have a revision and there are lots of options if that needs to be done---so the DS is in the back of my mind but I think I want to try to accomplish my goal with the sleeve first---

You are absolutely right about educating yourself on all of the options that are out there--I had no Idea that there where any other options besides the Band and the RNY until i started poking around on here.

This is such a great place!

I know that when I was at my first class, Dr. Haque (SP??) did include the DS as one of the surgeries they perform. I am positive about this, as I am interested in the DS, so I made sure I understood him correctly.

That was as of March 5th.....so good luck!

Those who have done their pathways, how long does it take??? (Just getting impatient!!!)

Good luck to those who are sooooo close!!!

Lisa,

Thanks for the information. I have confirmed that today as well. Madigan does have the DS as a WLS now. I am very excited about this.

If you do decide to have the DS I too would encourage you to go to the support group.  This is the first time I have heard anything about Madigan doing it but there are several of us still trying to educate about labs for RNY, even more important for DS'ers.  Be prepared to fight for some things in the future, certain labs etc.  Not something I would do unless I was the kind of person who was very proactive about things.
Good luck!!
