Like some others I take 50MU daily...

This isn't abnormal around the Pacific NW when you consider the 'natural' way we vit D is through sun exposure!!

My levels are still questionable, and after the next testing, I might have mine even increased to more.

I take a lot of D . Like Karin , i've had a medial RNY . I've had to up mine twice . A doctor from Scotland , that I met at UW , said they think there is a link between D deficiency & MS . Washington state has a high rate of MS , as does Ireland & Scotland .

I know of 2 people that take 150, 000 iu daily!!!!!  Thing is, most of us are quite deficient in D (pre-op) and don't even realize it, especially here where we don't sunbathe much.

My low D wasn't found until I had WLS, which is too bad since it's much easier to raise the level before we have a mal-absorptive surgery.

I had to take 100,000 iu / day to get my number up from 6, into the bottom of the range (30), than taper down to a maintenance dose.

Kudos to Dr Oh for being on top of this, as some surgeons stink at the nutrition part, and just pass that to the nutritionist (and I have a DS, so my nutritionist was only versed in RNY nutrition, arrgh).

Newer studies are showing that we need more D, and that it is very important for us to be able to use calcium. Our bodies can cannibalize the calcium out of us for years with no symptoms, and then you have real problems, so again, YAY for Dr Oh!

Some of us take the 50k a day. I'm a distal.

Dr. Oh is just ahead of the curve on this. It'll take about 5 yrs before other programs even add 1000 IU to their programs. He KNOWS that your D will crash, so works to prevent it. Much better to prevent than to intervene, you know?

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

I was low on D so Dr. Oh put me on 25,000 IU three times as week not daily.
