Hello,

I'm pretty new here. My visit to meet the surgeon is scheduled for December 1. I was wondering if everything goes well how long it might be until the surgery.

Thanks!

Carol-
I go to the UW Medical Center my surgery is on October 29th, 2008. I started the long process on Jan. 6th, 2008 when I placed a call to the UW for someone to call and do a intake over the phone.
In March 2008 someone called me for an appointment to first meet the doctor/surgeon
In April 2008 was the required seminar
In May 2008 I have a appointment with the social worker and dietation
In August 2008 saw the nurse for teaching & doctor
October 2008 is my pre-op appointment & the nurse & surgeon

October 29th, 2008

So basically the whole process takes about a year. That's if the doctors don't go on vacation with is why it took so long for my case.

Hope this helps.

Wow. I was hoping for a short wait, but I did figure it might be longer. I've been to the seminar already so that will shorten it a bit.

Thanks!

I also went to U of W.  I started the process Jan. 24.  I had to wait for the seminar and finish all my tests and evaluations.  I had to wait until September 3rd for the surgery because of work.  I asked at the seminar how long the process usually takes and was told about 4 months after the seminar.  It just depends what Dr. they assign you to and how backed up they are.  Just follow the steps and it will be here before you know it.  I was relieved that it took as long as it did because I think it's really important to get your mind wrapped around the surgery and how your life will be impacted.  Are you attending the support group at the U of W?  That is a must!

Hi Kathleen!  She's my buddy from group!

Everything is alright in the end.  If it's not alright, it's not the end.

I only wish I could attend the support group! I am currently without a vehicle and live in Port Orchard. I have a couple of friends who have had the surgery (one about 20 years ago, when we had just graduated high school) and try to get info from them and here on this forum.

I know what you mean about needing to get used to the idea of having the surgery. I think if it took only a couple of weeks, that would be too short & be hard to get used to!

I really need to talk to someone about post-surgery diet, since I am a vegetarian and plan to stay that way. I am going to look around this site some more and see if I can find others in that situation.

Thanks for the info!

I have the same Dr as you. How do you like him and the whole office and staff. Everyone seems nice to me and I am glad to have some professionals to treat me with respect for once!
I am new to the forum.

Carol,

Im Sunny, I have WLS on 10/28/08. I started my process on July 2nd, 08 with the intake phone interview. I had to do only 2 appts. I did the other pre-op tests before going to seminar on 2/21/08.  All together this time it took 15 months from phone interview to surgery. It all depends on the doctor you are assigned.

See if you can do some the pre-operative testing before you meet with surgeon. It could save you time. Good luck.

Hi Sunny!

Thanks for the info. I think I will call the center today and see if there is anything I can do to keep things running smoothly & maybe speed the process a bit, since I don't see the Dr. until 12/1.

Hi,

I work in the admitting dept and we process the referrals for all surgeries.  From the latest bariatric ones I've seen they are currently scheduling in late Jan and into Feb 09.

If you need a sleep study I suggest getting it out of the way asap.  Also, go to the seminar if you haven't already.

Good luck
