Pepto Bismal is also known as Bismuth Subsalicylate, which is a form of aspirin and an NSAID. You should not be taking Pepto Bismal after weight loss surgery. It can cause stomach ulcers.

The only medication I was told to avoid was NSAIDs. I haven't heard of any problems with Pepto Bismol and VSG.

Topic: RE: Nexium

Nexium is a PPI. A medication that is used to treat or prevent GERD. Not for appetite control.

PPI are class of medication that should be taken only if needed. They can cause side effects and there is enough studies to tell about that. When taken every day, they affect stomach acid production, that in effect can cause malabsorption of proteins and some vitamins. Unfortunately they don't interfere with digestion and absorption of carbs/sugars. The last ones are responsible for most weight gain.

Systematic use of PPI are show to contribute to kidneys damage. Increase in food born stomach flu/ getting norovirus. They even can interfere with gut motility - how fast the food travel through your digestive tract.

PPI once taken daily need to be taper off, and should not be just stopped, because as the system adapts to them, stopping it may cause a severe rebound of acid production, severe GERD that can cause damage to the sleeve and even your esophagus.

If you think you are having GERD - see your doctor.

I would try to examine causes of appetite, not assume you have GERD.

I am almost 5 years out and back when I had my surgery my doctor said I could take Pepto Bismol. (I take tablets). There are no updated post about this, but older post say you shouldn't take it. What is your doctor telling you? Thanks!

Topic: RE: VSG and GERD

I was on Dexilant, Zantac, and carafate all at one time and still had severe reflux.

Yes I had the revision from sleeve to bypsss. I didn't put this in my first post but I developed a hypertensive LES from having the sleeve surgery so I had a surgery called a Heller myotomy. My surgeon assured me it would fix my reflux. It didn't. Because I didn't want bypass, he did a procedure on me called Fundoplasty with plication. He explained it as sewing the stomach and esophagus together. I never could find any research on it but I know I did not want bypass. So my one sleeve surgery turned into 6 surgeries. I know it's quite unbelievable but it happened. So I also ended up having 7 endoscopies, 4 CT scans, 3 upper GI tests, 2 bravo testing, 3 manometry tests, gastric emptying study, and a 2.5 hospital stay where I was misdiagnosed with a perforation of my stomach from the acid reflux. So I've been through hell physically, emotionally and financially.

I would never discourage anyone from having weight loss surgery because the chances of having all the complications I've had is probably 0. However, I am unequivocally against the sleeve surgery if you have reflux. If I can help one person not go through even half of what I have that's great. I literally complained about severe acid reflux at my one week post op visit. My surgeon completely dismissed me by saying "you shouldn't be having reflux." Well I was!!!!

Keep us updated and let us know what your surgeon says!

Thank you! Your heartburn couldn't be controlled with medication? That is what my doctor insinuated. When I was pregnant I had the horrible kind of acid vomit waking me up in middle of night..anytime I'd lay down really. It was horrible and I can't imagine going thru it 24/7 after sleeve. I think after reading ALL these ppl saying the SAME thing- I've made up my mind...I'm no longer going with VSG. I'm calling my doctor this week to let him know and if they don't "let" me, I'll go somewhere else! It's not worth it to have this become such a problem and I'm sure it will for me (the gerd).

I hope you're feeling better these days after all that?! You had revision bypass correct?

Thanks for the response:)
