as I recall, they told me not to use them early out, but I've been using them for a long time now (I'm close to five years out)
I use straws all of the time. Some doctors are now advising weight loss surgery patients to use straws from day one to help increase fluid intake. It is a personal choice and you are not doing anything that will hurt you.

Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
I am a little over 5 years post op.Wondering if straws are still out for me. I've been having difficulty getting in my daily water intake. So, I started measuring out my water and drinking with a straw. Thought I should ask since I'm over 5 years out, is this ok? I was told using a straw would cause air in the stomach. Is this still true years out? Thank you!
Hi Gwen,
Its nice to see you are still on the forum. Congratulations on Graduation, the new job and the new home!
Since my surgery, I've had 4 ounces of salmon for breakfast most mornings. I love it. I cook it sou vide (sealed in plastic and slow cooked in a water bath). It has a lovely texture and taste. I make 4 to 6 servings at a time, and then just divide it up and take a serving every morning. Its easy and satisfying.
best wishes,
Carol

The pain is very individual. Some people don't feel too much pain, others can be in pain, or discomfort for a week or longer. Do your best in a meantime.
My pain became more manageable in a week 2. First few days was really challenging. I survived by trying to rest, to sleep it of. And since I am allergic to most pain medications, when I took any opiates, I had to take a benadryl and the combination would knock me out. Only to be woken up by pain. Knowing it is going to get better allowed me to have enough patience.
If you still in a major pain after a week, that may be a cause to let the doctor know.
As for the shower- call your center and ask them. Different doctors protect the wounds differently and their requirements for wounds care can be different.

I am 4 days post-surgery. Coughing and getting out of bed feels like a knife in the largest incision. When can I expect that to go away?
Also, did your doc tell you when you can shower/pu****er on the wounds?

The sleeve surgery does not have malabsorption. Your medication will not be affected.
I have bipolar and my medications were not affected at all by the VSG.

I am loving Folio cheese wraps from Costco. They are a calorie hit at 180. I roll either strips of turkey or chicken. Can use lunch meat if you like it. Roll it wrap in tin foil. Easy to go. My other is nonfat cottage cheese with peanut powder and a little stevia. Can indulge and add half a banana if you like them. Fits in small container and I eat it when I get to work and i am getting report. Those are my go to fast breakfast foods.

According to my surgeon there is less problem with medication absorption from a VSG as opposed to a bypass (RNY). The bypass uses malabsorption as part of it's method to lose weight as well as a drastically reduced stomach size. With a bypass you may need to pay closer attention to your dosage and effectiveness. Best resource for answers would be your surgeon. I chose VSG specifically to decrease problems with medication absorption. Had a problem anyhow, but found out that was from taking my vitamins too close to my medication and the vitamins blocked the absorption. There are many things to consider. If you currently have reflux, bypass may be better option as VSG can make it worse. So far I have not had that issue. Knock on wood. Discuss this with your surgeon thoroughly before making your choice. Good luck to you!

Thank you Jimxy6, for your January 11 reply. Interesting about the difference in yourself and your daughter. I am 59 and will have the vertical sleeve on February 4th. Any advice is appreciated. I hope I am not sick from food and not hungry all the time.
