Topic: RE: Life after surgery question

I had surgery back in 2008. A lot of people who had surgery around the same time had aspirations of finding a career to help promote weight loss surgery or work in a surgeon's office. Honestly, none of them were successful. I think many of us get excited about losing the weight and want to save the world.

If you have not already done so, reach out to your surgeon and volunteer to help his practice in some capacity- perhaps you can speak at their seminars, when they start back up again. You can ask your surgeon for suggestions on what to do to become involved and actually get paid- maybe you can go back to school to become a registered dietician or some other career that helps bariatric patients.

Good luck.

I am an emotional eater. If I have bariatric surgery and can't eat my feelings what do I do with them? What have you fine that works?

Ah yes, the meds. I've been on antipsychotics for over a decade. It's just that much harder to lose and keep weight off. I'm not sure I have any advice to offer, I just wanted to say I feel your pain on the meds.

I have zero regrets, but the issue of loose skin will hit most of us at some point. For me, as a man, it's not so bad. I like the way I look in clothes, compression clothing helps with that if I'm ever trying to look extra nice. However, there are times where I look at my skin and am not filled with the most positive of feelings. It's worse for my girlfriend, she had a higher starting weight than me. It's harder on women on general, I feel, for a number of reasons. She doesn't regret her choice at all either, but she still claims she liked her body better when it was huge as compared to "deflated". That's just where she is now psychologically, and in time that could change. It's hard to convey just how fast our bodies change, and there's going to be an adjustment period.

But I don't want to scare you off because that is just one negative in a sea of positives. This surgery changed my life. I'm a different person, and probably a better one as well.

I am someone who eats my feelings and am worried about what I do with that post surgery. Was that ever something you did and if so how did you deal with it post surgery?

My surgery date is almost here! I'm so excited and a tad nervous. When I was 14 I went through an 8 hour spinal fusion surgery for severe scoliosis so I feel like it I can get through that, I can through this! I just have this fear in the back of my mind that I may fail.

I was also wondering, do you have any surgery day advice?

OH helped too. I lost my DH at the beginning of this year and the year prior was extremely difficult.

I have participated in an OH VSG maintenance group since I reached goal in 2016 and I find the RNY daily menu thread to be super helpful when I want to be vigilant.

Nope! BEST THING I EVER DID FOR MYSELF!

I would guess you will get a similar response from most on this site. IMHO those who never changed their eating patterns and regained or had some health issues may regret it but the former probably isn't on OH anymore and the latter would be a small minority.

I too have a major sweet tooth but just lost a 20 pound regain by following WW. I needed the accountability, but I also found some great sweet satisfying recipes utilizing fruits which made me feel like I wasn't on a diet. I am happy to continue with the same eating pattern. I do still follow sleeve "rules" and est dense protein first to fill me up and never drink within 30 minutes after a meal.
