VSG and GERD
Hi there..as I'm getting closer to my surgery I'm becoming more worried and anxious thinking about the huge life change I'm about to experience. As I've been reading about the VSG, I've read a lot of people saying they have big problems with heartburn and GERD. Since I already have GERD now I am double worried that it will be really bad. I see some people have decided to go for RNY revision due to this. I don't want to have to have another surgery and go through all that again just because of my severe heartburn. Yes, I don't know if it will for sure be an issue but it seems because I already have it - it might? Also what other side effects can I expect or are common?
I find it hard to believe that a surgeon is willing to do a VSG on a person who has GERD. If you are going to have weight loss surgery and already have GERD insist upon RNY instead. Why go through the added misery and two surgeries, when RNY usually cures GERD.
Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
Omg I knew it. My doctor NEVER mentioned it'd be an issue or anything the 5+ times I've already seen him and they're well aware I have it because he switched me to zantac instead of Prilosec for the H.pylori test.
I'm with White Dove. The percentage of those coming down with gerd after the sleeve and needing to revise is really high. I wouldn't even consider VSG with existing reflux.

The thing is, I've already tried discussing different surgery options with him and he seemed like gung-ho on me having VSG because the surgeon mostly performs those..it's like they're already set on it. But ultimately it's MY body and I'm the one who has to live with the possible worsening of my GERD so when I go see the whole team of ppl this Wednesday I'm definitely going to bring this up.
I had VSG and my surgeon would only perform it if I had no history of GERD at all. I'm 2.5 years post-op and I have, so far, had zero issues with GERD. If I had a history I would have just had RNY in the first place.

Wow, I am just baffled as to why my doctors didn't think this was an issue. I see them Wednesday at weight loss center and I'm for sure going to bring this up! I want the RNY- I'm not about to go thru hell only to suffer more in future bc of heartburn. And trust me, heartburn and gerd is NO JOKE. dammit I hope my doctor's listen.

From you.
I would find another surgeon.sorry to say this , but it is because they don't care. They get paid the same for the VSG or the run but the VSG takes less time do they are actually making more money doing the VSG.
Plus, if your gets worsens, you will likely come bAck to them for a revision meaning double money
