That's a good way of cutting down on the questions - especially from the men folk!
If you want something specific, go with gallbladder - they might actually take it out at the same time. Or fixing a hiatal hernia - quite common amongst the obese, and often corrected along with WLS, so may actually be semi-true.

I only said I was having fairly minor surgery and didn't offer any other information. People assumed it was a "female" issue, since I wasn't talking about it more than that. No one was pushy enough to ask for more either.

I recommend avoiding lies, even the white ones. Just state that you're having surgery and change the subject. "I'm having surgery. Do you think we'll have snow on the 25th?" Repeat as necessary. If someone asks, "what surgery?" you can say, "I'd rather not go into details. Do you think we'll have snow on the 25th?"
I.e., there are options between full disclosure and lying - those options lay in the realm of setting healthy boundaries. :)
However, be aware that people will gossip once you start losing weight. Think about how you'll want to address that. For me, I'd rather people have the truth as fodder for their gossip, so I told everyone that I had WLS afterward. I'd rather people know the truth than make up stupid **** or worry that I've got cancer. You might also consider what you'll say when people ask you for weight loss advice - as telling people that you've lost weight with just diet and exercise will be a lie. If you could have lost with just diet and exercise, you wouldn't have had surgery.
That all said - you have complete control over the information you share with people.

I told people that I had abdominal surgery.
My friends and family new what type, but sometimes business contacts would ask questions (I was going to be off for 4-6 weeks) . If some were "brave" and asked more questions - I told them that they need to fix my insides. Any more questions after that I was considering rude and would just change a subject.
