Whatcha Eating Today VSGers? Friday, 12/7/2018

Good morning all and happy Friday! I went to my MFR (myofascial release) class this morning and it was lovely. Tonight I'm going back to the college for a poetry reading, which I hope will also be lovely!

QOTD: What was your favorite subject in high school? Why was it your favorite? Did it remain your favorite subject? Do you still do anything with that subject now? (I'll reply in a comment.)

QOTD: My favorite subject in high school was definitely math, although I really loved everything except U.S. History and Physics. When I think about the whys of this, it's because my teachers for those two subjects sucked and all of my other teachers were awesome. It's amazing how much a teacher can make or break a subject.

Math was my favorite for a number of reasons. My parents were both math majors, so math was in my blood and I was never led to believe that math was "hard" - it was just something that people did. Additionally, I always had two people I could turn to for explanations and who were totally willing to answer any random questions I have, whether the questions were "age appropriate" or not. That was super inspiring. Since I was good at math, that helped to make it my favorite! Then.. there was the crush. I had a HUGE crush on the teacher I had in 10th and 11th grade for pre-calc, calc, and comp sci.

It didn't remain my favorite subject. When I went to college straight out of high school I majored in math, but went to a very small college and didn't have much choice in professors, so I had to take my initial required classes with the same prof who just did not work for me. I'm sure he was a great prof, but his teaching style and my learning style were wildly divergent. So I went from being really good at math to being totally clueless and failing.

I don't do anything formal with math in my life now, but it's still useful for so many things. I had to take a stats class for my AA and that's been amazingly useful for reading scientific journal articles and my understanding of study methodology and results. And I've got to admit that when I took that stats class it reignited all of my old love of math and I had to have many discussions with myself that amounted to, "No, Gwen, gerontology is what you want to do with your life, you do not want to become a statistician." But omg, being a statistician would be so freaking fascinating. :P

QOTD-In high school I loved anything related to History, especially Eastern Europe. I lost my passion for it in nursing school. But when I went back to college for Political Science in the mid 90's I picked it right back up again and still love it to this day. I had a terrible time with Statistics Gwen, terrible. The professor would let me stay an hour after class to finish tests, thank goodness or I would never have passed it(barely)!

Layered tortilla casserole, if it is like the one my grandma makes, is my favorite meal hands down. When she asks if I want her to make one I immediately say NO! I can't control myself, I just know it.

I want to say I just ate between the layers of tortilla, but I did have a few bites. It's not the best option, but unfortunately it's one of my mom's favorite too:-) I found out I can't control myself either!

Going to chime in even though it is so late. Was a long day today, and cold. Spent the late afternoon at Sam's Club, which was a nightmare. I got such a good deal on a few things though that I couldn't pass it up. Cat food and scoopable litter (exciting, I know).

QOTD: I loved art. I loved it because I felt free and loved to draw and paint. Never was good at drawing, but I like painting. Heck, probably not even good at that, but I still love it. Definitely still my favorite subject and I want to get heavier back into painting.

My favorite subject in high school was Chemistry but I don't work as a chemist now, I work in IT.

I loved the precision and certainty of chemistry (and mathematics and physics, etc). If it's got a formula, then that's for me. Computer programming is equally precise, when done well, and it appears to my sense of order.
