I had trouble with dehydration as well and fainted at work due to it. Hydration has been the hardest for me to work on since I used to be able to guzzle water down, now I can't.

The rule of thumb is you need your body weight divided by 2 in fluids a day. So when we are heavier we need more than the normal bodies person does.

No probably not! Once you are a little further out it becomes easier to get more. I do think you need a bit more than your average amount though. One problem I had was I could not retain fluids. My sodium intake was too low.

  • I am so sorry you had to go through that! That is one thing that I have been worried about as well some days I feel like I'm drinking a lot and then I add up my totals and it's nowhere near where I need to be. So the other day I bought this little guy

and I set it for 15 minutes every 15 minutes it goes off I take two moderate sized sips yesterday I got almost 60 some ounces in and that was jus****er That's not including my protein shakes or broth or anything else just an idea. I'm glad you're back to feeling a little bit better and you are right this is a wonderful supportive community and I'm so glad I found you guys!

Sorry you've had this experience.

One week out of surgery, I fainted. Prior to that I had felt fine and I THOUGHT I was reaching my fluid intake, but ended up in the ER getting fluids. I was dehydrated. What I did that I think helped both my fluid intake and my protein was make sure I had one protein shake (30 grams, 24 ounces) and a Protein2o water (15 grams,16 ounces) and using crystal lite to mix things up. I haven't had an issues since then, thankfully.

For those who aren't aware, a common occurrence in the rapid weighloss phase is orthostatic hypotension. Its a dizzy, lightheaded feeling, especially right after standing up from lying down or sitting. Its caused by a rapid drop in blood pressure, which then goes back up pretty quickly. Checking your blood pressure only works if you check it while dizzy. If you check it at the doctors later on, it will seem fine.

Orthostatic hypotension happens because the circulatory system needs of morbidly obese and rapidly shrinking people are not the same. OH symptoms and dehydration symptoms can be similar.

They checked my bp while laying, immediately after sitting up and then immediately after standing.

Thank you for that info. I go see surgeon first thing in the morning and will definitely ask about that.

Thank you to everybody for the encouragement, advice and wisdom. Like somebody mentioned in another post, it definitely takes a community.

It went good. He suggested I drink some Pedialyte daily until I can increase my overall fluid intake. Removed staples. Said everything else looked good. I was allowed to move onto pureed foods. Who knew just a few pieces of tofu could make you feel "normal"?

Hang in there. I am having some issues too, and I know how hard it is to stay optimistic, but we just have to get through this :)
