How much am I supposed to be eating?
Hi there
so it's been about 2.5 months since surgery. I have had my ups and downs . I still feel quite a bit of restriction. Per my nutritionist I should be able to eat about a cup of food. Well it just depends on what it is. I can only get about 2 oz of chicken, can't tolerate steak / pork or anything else. That being said sometimes I can not even get the 2 oz in. I try to eat slowly and a chew well. Quite often feel pain and at times will throw up this slimy thing . My surgeon doesn't seem concerned . I am getting concerned because I thought at this point it would be better. Anybody went through this? Thanks!
1c is a LOT, especially at this point. 2 ounces is much more sensible. I'm 4.5 years post-op and I still measure my meals at 4-6 ounces, depending on what I'm eating.
If 2 ounces is too much for you right now, and it seems like it is, try measuring 1.5 ounces and doing that if it's comfortable. You can always supplement with a protein to ensure you're reaching your protein goals.

Thanks! I will cut down to 1-2 ounces . I just got very worried when I was told I should be eating about a cup. Thanks again!!
Wow. What Gwen M said. I'm at a year, and the doc said 3/4-1 C is a big meal for me. I have found I can always eat 5 meals (not snacks or grazing) over the day to get in protein & calories (about 1100 at this point in maintenance). But a cup at a time and I would be in barf-city (TMI)

I had my surgery one week after yours so we are at about the same stage.
I haven't been able to eat more than two ounces either. I average about 400-500 calories but a lot of that is liquid protein supplement. I use the isopure no carb ready make drinks in fruit flavors. It is 40g of protein. It keeps me from being hungry and allows me to meet my protein goal.
I think that a cup of food at a meal is entirely unrealistic this soon out. I always proceed with caution because we are still learning our new anatomy. It sounds like you are following the guidelines and will progress accordingly. If there is one thing I have learned it is that we all heal differently and lose weight at different rates.
The biggest challenges for me were figuring out what my "full" sensation was, and learning foods I could tolerate, and in what quantities. At first I couldn't go more than a day or two without getting an attack of the "slimies". By about 3 months the "slimies" had become a rarity.
I'm 4 months out. The amount I can eat is determined mostly by the texture and density. To give you an example, I can typically eat any one of the following in one sitting.
smoked tofu - 1/4 of a packet
soya yoghurt - one of those teeny little pots with a tbsp of milled flaxseed
high protein granola w/ oat milk - 1/3 cup
lightly cooked (firm) veggies - 1/2 cup
well-cooked (soft) veggies - 3/4 cup
soup - 1 cup
I still can't tolerate dry food, like falafels.
Thank you so much guys!!
I felt worried when he said that. I'm totally not going to even attempt to go to that amount of food. I am hitting my protein goals most of the days and the days that I don't the I drink a few more ounces of my protein shakes. I still take one every morning for breakfast.
Today I went down to 1.5 oz of shredded chicken and did just fine. I hate the slimmes so much!!!
Thaks again!!!
