Hide Surgery and Liquid Diet

Hi,

Has anyone hid their surgery from friends and family?

I've hidden mine but as I'm still in the liquid stage I'm having problems hiding it, I have family staying with me next weekend and an unsure how to hide this. Does anyone have any advice?

"I'm recovering from a stomach bug and the doctor wanted me to stick to a liquid diet."

"I'm trying out a new weight loss diet and it requires me to be on liquids for a few weeks."

"I'm working with my doctor on losing weight, and they have me on this medically monitored liquid diet." (Not technically a lie.)

"I had some dental work done and my jaw is sore, so I'm sticking to liquids until it feels better since chewing sucks."

Good luck.

I'd say it depends on why you're hiding it, and if you're willing to lie to them or not. Your answers should tell you what you can or should say.

When I had a lapband I hid it and eventually came to realize it was because I wasn't confident that I would be successful - and didn't want people to know. With VSG, my results were so dramatic that I was not at all hesitant to tell people - and delight in telling people, lol. Good luck - it's an amazing thing!

Most people will eventually find out. If one person know, soon everyone would know.

If you trying to hide it because they can be judgemental, or non supporting, is one thing. Or you don't want to be a center of attention. But eventually they will find out, and they'll know you as someone that lies.

Unfortunately some people are rude, and feel like the have rights to know about you.

Everyone is doing a cleanse or something these days. If you say something like "I'm doing a liquid diet to kickstart my new weight loss and fitness routine" they won't be surprised when your weight loss starts being visible. You'll definitely have to say something but what you say is totally up to you.

I had work discrimination issues to contend with so did not reveal my status. Be prepared to deal with frequent questions, as it will not let up until maybe 6 months or so after you have lost your full amount. Even then, it will still come up sporadically- but at least not multiple times daily. I eventaully gave a standard reply of following a diet (liquid diet in your case), exercise, and recovery from medical issues... all having different impact levels at different times. It was a little easier for me to just stick with that though as I dealt with cancer issues throughout the weight loss period and after, hence most people were reluctant to pry too much and would be satisfied with just that canned response. For that occasional nosy-ass fucktard I would then just say I didn't want to discuss my medical history with them. With a well-practiced teacher look of "cut that **** out". Worked great.

Many on this site might say you can't hide the surgery. Nope, I totally disagree. You are unlikely to lose 40 pounds a month for 4 months. You are more likely going to lose an average of 10-15 pounds per month- within a "normal" diet range. The difference for us tends to be we post those numbers for 6-8 consecutive months adding up to a LOT of weight.

Good for you. We don?t owe VIP access to people on the cheap seats of our lives, do we?

No one a my work has pried so far. Like you say, it?s not like I lost 30lbs overnight. Also, I work in a very professional place where 90% of people understand that body talk is not work appropriate talk. Additionally, these people have known me when I was close to my goal now, so they probably just think I?m yo-yo?ing again. One time that I lost a lot a few years ago, a guy asked me how I was losing so much weight. I told him ?stress and worry? and we both laughed. He never asked again.
