Hey! I am waiting to have surgery until October. how many people out there have had acid reflux before surgery and how has it affected them after? my surgeon is scaring me. I have it now. not horrible but not good either. This is the only thing stopping me at this point.

It's good that your surgeon is scaring you. A lot of folks end up having a revision to RNY because of herd. Skip the sleeve, and no straight to bypass. No way would I do VSG with existing gerd.

I agree with Grim. If I'd had reflux pre-op, I would have gone with RNY.

I had gerd pre sleeve, a very mild case. Since my sleeve, I only get it if I eat bread, little debbies, or cake. I don't eat those and I don't get acid reflux. That's not true for everybody though.

Sadly silent GERD is a thing, so just because you don't feel like you have reflux doesn't mean you don't have it.

I know a couple people, myself included that had GERD preop that got a sleeve done. Didn't get worse persay, just needed to be more vigilant with keeping up on when I take it everyday and how I eat.

There is a direct correlation betweeen Carbs & Gerd though. When I eat like crap, it'll let me know it's there. I drink way to much coffee but doesn't seem to faze me. Only had to reach for Tums a couple times this year since I went back to eating Keto.

Wouldn't want the RNY personally, but equal amount of people wouldn't want the sleeve either I suppose. If your Gerd is really bad now, then RNY might be the way to go.

I didn't have it before VSG but ended up with severe reflux after and had to revise to RNY. Knowing what I know now, if I had reflux/GERD prior to surgery I would never risk VSG.

I had significant reflux before my VSG and continued to have it afterwards - a bit worse now. The medication does help and it improving but I am 12 months out.

I can live with it but do listen to your doctor. They do know best.
