Surgery day!
I'm glad to report that surgery was a complete success. I was able to get up and walk pretty quickly after getting to my room, and have made about three circuits around the nurses station over the last six hours, plus so so many trips to the bathroom (these IV fluids run right through me!). As this is my first surgery, I was very anxious about the procedure, and anesthesia in particular. Though I did wake up a little startled in the OR, my surgeon and his team were very good about reorienting me and keeping me calm. The only thing that's really getting me is these gas pains! I keep feeling like I need to belch...like it's *right there* and just not getting out. I have a couple times, and have been moving and walking to hopefully alleviate it. I know it'll take some time but so far, I'm really looking forward to this journey and I'm so happy to be a part of this community. Thank you all for showing so much support in all your posts.
Congrats!! I feel relieved reading this bcuz my surgery is in less than three weeks and I am morified!
Keep us updated!! ?
Still not too bad. I wouldn't so much call it a terrible pain as I would call it extreme soreness, but that's to be expected since they did cut into me and remove a sizable chunk, lol. Fighting some nausea atm. The liquid Lortab tastes like cough syrup (the bad tasting kind. Yuck) just keep in mind everyone's experience is different. But I know this'll all be a distant memory in a couple weeke. :)

Having had quite a few surgeries over the years (including VSG), I have developed a theory about preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. I find that when I think the aftermath of the surgery is going to be really difficult/painful, it usually isn't! Conversely when I think it is going to be easy it is usually harder than expected. In other words, I think that your experience at least partially depends on your expectations.
With that said, we all have different tolerances for pain and are in different places physically when we have surgery so that obviously affects the outcome. I personally expected VSG to be painful and difficult to recover from and it was much easier than I thought it would be.

So happy for you! Sounds like you're doing what needs to be done!

Post Op Day 2 (POD#2), Tuesday (POD1) was kind of rough. I fought a LOT of nausea, almost immediately after taking the liquid paid meds but was so afraid of vomiting it up and not getting relief from that pain that I'd sit still and just concentrate on breathing and swallowing until it passed. Thankfully, it always did pass after a few seconds (that felt like ages). I managed to get some sleep, getting up out of bed is rough because I always feel this sharp pain that I'm assuming is from them cutting open muscles/etc in the upper left abdomen. I think I woke up around 4am, which isn't bad considering I went to bed at 10 and didn't expect to be able to stay comfortable enough to sleep that long, but it was! Woke up, took my pain meds and actually DIDN'T feel nauseated! It was an awesome feeling. I'm still struggling to get down the 36 oz of fluids they wanted me to work on doing for the first 3 days post-op, but I'm getting close. Drank 1.5 of the new whey tubes (which are roughly 4oz each) to get in the protein requirements, then put a little crystal light into a 24oz tumblr with some ice and water and *almost* finished it...like 3/4ths of the way, but hey! It's progress! I've been keeping up with walking around the house every hour just to stretch, did my fifteen min walk, and overall am feeling like the pain has significantly improved, as has the nausea and gas. Still a little battered and bruised, but mentally, I'm already feeling better. I'm not hungry at all, not craving anything, and shrugged it off when my roommate ordered chinese, happy to sit here with my chicken broth and lemonade lol! I know there will be lots of ups and downs, but so far I think it's going well (knock on wood), and hope it continues to do so. For tomorrow, I'll have to plan my walk out either earlier or later. It's incredibly hot/humid here and is pretty dreadful to walk in.
