The fruity Syntax Nectar shakes mixed with a similar flavor of Crystal Light water worked best for me early out. Plus, it has the correct form of protein after WLS. This means your body will best be able to actually use the protein you take in.

I particularly liked Nectar Fuzzy Navel mixed with an orange-y Crystal Light or Mio to taste. If you go to Vitamin Shoppe, you can buy a couple flavors in individual packets to try it out before committing to a large canister.

You can also buy a sampler pack with all the flavors online:

Thanks Julie!

I did get the sample pack...some of them I like and others notsomuch.

I'm using the LiquaCel liquid protein in my water now, and it tastes even better than water with Crystal Light or True Lemon.

I can't believe I didn't think of it sooner. Maybe I got my brain sleeved too. heheh

PS: You new pic is really great! Love it.

Glad I could help!

And I love this new picture, too! I skated in my first roller derby bout this past weekend and had a blast!

Kat THANK YOU!

I have LiquaCel liquid protein and I'm mixing it in my water. It's GOOD! I don't know why I didn't think of that when I was on the 3 days of clear fluids.

Thanks again!

FYI, LiquaCel is not a good choice. It's "hydrolized collagen" protein, which is not absorbed very well at all by the body. Although it claims to have 16g of protein per serving, you're probably getting less than half of that.

Whey protein isolate or soy protein have much better bioavailability and will do you much better in the long run!

I have an article somewhere that compares absorption of different protein types, I'd be happy to pull it up if you'd be interested.

Yes please, I'd love to see it.

I'm post-surgery now. Feeling so much more relaxed and like my old self, emotionally.

This article from the ASMBS has some good info, check table 7. Basically, collagen protein is not "complete" and doesn't have all necessary amino acids to be absorbed properly by the body. It also has some other really good recommendations and is an overall good read if you want some background science.

https://asmbs.org/wp/uploads/2014/05/nutritional-guidelines. pdf

Collagen is not a complete protein-- that is, it does not have all required amino acids for absorption. A complete protein, like soy or whey, has Indispensable Amino Acids (IAA). Collagen, on the other hand, is incomplete; it's insufficient in 8 or the 9 amino acids, and lacks the 9th completely.

Regarding other protein types-- this article is a bit complicated, but Table 1 is what you want to look at. The "biological value" column is a measurement about how efficient the body uses the protein.

Syntrax Nectar is whey protein isolate, which is the best-absorbed kind out there. This was the only kind I could ever stomach!

I've never heard of the Matrix kind. Looks like it's is whey, casein, and egg, all of which are good sources.

I think either one would be fine!
