How Much is Too Much?

I'm 3 days post-op, still on clear liquids but starting full liquids tomorrow.

I'm really focusing on water right now, as I know dehydration can really be a thing. But I'm worried about drinking too much at a time...I'm sipping, but can easily sip 4 ounces in 15-20 minutes. I really do not want to do anything that may not be good for Sylvia (my new tummy's name heheh). Should I slow it down some? I'm really thirsty much of the time, and water is my beverage of choice, but I'm willing to be thirsty if I have to.

Thanks for your input!

My understanding is that you should drink as much water as feels comfortable and sip on it throughout the entire day. You need at least 64oz minimally. 4oz over a 15 minute period sounds great.

You should be getting at least 64 ounces of liquid a day - more is better. You can't really overdo liquids, since they go through your stomach. If you're thirsty all the time, chances are you're not drinking enough.

My water bottles are 32 oz; today my goal is to finish two of them. Yesterday I got down 48 oz.

So I'm working on it!

Pre-surgery I would easily drink at least 3 of those water bottles. My goal is to get back to that.

I'm really uncomfortable if I drink 4 oz at once, so I'm trying to pace myself better.

Thanks!

Many people find it useful to set a timer for 15 minutes and take a few sips every time it goes off.

Getting enough water in was my hardest lesson to learn so far. Dehydration is no joke, and I didn't learn the water lesson that well until a year after surgery when I had to go to the ER for a few bags of fluids. It's good that you're concerned with it so early. Don't make yourself uncomfortable though! And remember you can count other things towards your liquid amounts too. SF popsicles, broth, protein shake. Those count!

The first week I tried to drink a one-oz cup every five minutes (so the same as what you are doing) and it worked for me. I also made sure to drink 1-2 oz every time I woke up in the night at the very beginning. I am now almost 5 weeks out and am able to hit my total water goal during waking hours (although I still keep water by the bed in case I am just thirsty....). Congrats on being 3 days out!

if it hurts, it is too much. If 4 oz hurts stop st 3.5 oz for s day or two, then try 4.

Liquids go right through the sleeve and directly into the intestines since the pyloric valve automatically opens when liquids are introduced into the sleeve.

Drinking as much as is comfortable, as often as possible, is the way to avoid dehydration.
