Gerd anyone?
Hello All
i have just been approved for VSG surgery on July 13th. I was told by surgeon that there is a 20% chance of getting gerd post-op with VSG.
I am excited about the surgery and also nervous about the Gerd issue. Have reduced my coffee consumption and trying to drink only herbal teas.
The surgeon said that caffeine use can contribute to the gerd.
Have any of you VSGers developed gerd? If so how severe? Need medication?

I have heard the number is closer to 40%.
I did not have regular GERD prior to my sleeve (only a day or two every few months), but developed it after. I had a second surgery 10 months after my sleeve to re-repair a hiatal hernia that he'd tried to fix at the time of my sleeve that didn't hold. Stopping caffeine made no difference in the severity of my symptoms. Thankfully the second op fixed it.
I had minor GERD prior to VSG, but had a hiatal hernia corrected at the time of surgery. I do not have GERD now, and I drink about 32 ounces of caffeinated coffee a day (more than I did prior to VSG).

Over a year out and no gerd for me so far and I drink about 16oz of coffee a day. I hated coffee prior to bag, I love it now.
I've had GERD for a few years; it runs in the family (and yes, I am the only obese one.)
I took a one a day pantoprazole before surgery and I still take it now. It works fine.
My doctor and surgeon agreed to try to take me off of it in December because some studies have shown long-term effects of PPI's that are less than exciting. If it doesn't work, then I'll keep taking it.
:-)

I had VSG in May, 2014. I never had GERD or Reflux prior to my surgery. By 8 months out, I had developed a severe case of GERD. I had a manometry and pH test and my acid was measured at 409% higher than normal. There were no medications that would help (although it was discovered I have a gene mutation that affects the rates I metabolize PPIs, so there aren't many options for me). anyway, I ended up having to convert to RNY to resolve my GERD.
My issues were NOT food related. I could end up getting reflux from water, plain chicken, etc. It's definitely a consideration, and based on what I know now, if I had any reflux/GERD prior to surgery, I would stay away from VSG. I know others will argue that point with me and many feel surgery will cure GERD, but that is in no way what happened to me.

No GERD for me. I have occasional mild heartburn from time to time, but it is mild and cured with a couple of Tums.
i drink 32oz of caffeine coffee a day, and usually 64 more oz of decaf. So far so good.
I had a very mild GERD before surgery but didn?t have an official diagnosis. I took Prilosec daily for a few years but was able to come off of the Prilosec after diet change. Before surgery I only ate a few tums here and there, usually related to overeating.
After surgery I have no GERD, I?m 6 mnth out. I?m completely off my PPI. I drink about 12 oz of coffee every morning. I have to eat an occasional tum (not even weekly). Usually related to eating something I shouldn?t have, or taking a few bites more that I should have. I found minding my portions and not eating until I?m uncomfortable helps with this.
