2 weeks post op

Hey all, hope everyone is doing well. So, I am two weeks out since surgery and I have lost a significant amount of weight, which is great of course. It seems like almost everything I was told to expect hasn't been true for me and I'm curious if anyone else has found this to be true. I was told I would have no appetite, false. My stomach growls! I was told I would become full and feel satisfied quickly. False. Also, no one told me my palms would be so itchy hat I want to scratch right down to the bone!!! Am I alone in all of this?

I too felt "hunger", but many made me aware prior that it was a possibility due to stomach acid/reflux after the surgery. Are you taking prilosec or zantac? Also, I'm 7 months out, still eating small portions because I'm sated easily, but I do feel real hunger every few hours. Everyone's bodies are different. Some people say they never feel hungry again, & only remember to eat when they realize they feel weak.

The itchy may be from the narcotics. Are you still taking pain medication? I have a hyper sensitivity to narcotics, & have to take benadryl each time I take it.

Good uck on your new journey!

I haven't been on any pain meds since before I left the hospital! It started just yesterday out of nowhere. I also don't have and reflux or heartburn thankfully. I have a follow up with my dr on Monday so I will ask him about it. I was just curious if anyone else has gone through this stuff!

You don't have to feel burn to have stomach acid or reflux. Though every dr. has different protocol, almost everyone I know was put on acid blocker as protocol after vsg, for 6 months at least.

The I hands may be due to food allergies. One of my first symptoms of an allergic reaction to food - my palm and hands would itch. It can be allergies to food or sweetener or additives. I almost always react like that to food with soy protein added.

I felt hunger right away, but I think it was mostly Head hunger. I still struggle with that. My stomach made lots of noises from the beginning and still does (gurgling and/or growling). It does it after I eat as well as before.

I didn't feel full necessarily at your point because the nerves are healing so you can't feel it. It was a few months before I could "feel" the restriction.

I never had itchy palms.

The hunger pangs in the beginning are from over production of acid. Your stomach still produces the same amount of acid as if it were it's old size for awhile. You may not feel "heartburn", but just an insatiable hunger. Look up "acid gnawing associated with stomach acid". Keep taking your PPIs, and if you're not on them you should be. It does improve I promise. I'm 6mnths out, off my PPI, and don't get that feeling anymore. The palm itching is common with allergies. Could be an allergic reaction or from pollen in the air. May want to look at new lotions, or topical products you've used. Any new meds? Usually it will subside. Try Benadryl or Zyrtec for a couple of days. Just know the potentiate narcotic pain meds and will increase effects.

Thanks! I have been using Benadryl and gold bond cream, which has helped a lot. I am taking nexium but I only just started as my dr didn't give me any orders on that. I haven't taken pain meds since before I left the hospital and I'm not sure if it's an allergy or maybe a vitamin deficiency. I have my post op appt with my dr Monday so I will be sure to grill him. Thanks for your help!
