How much weight did you lose in the beginning?

Hi VSG'ers!

I am scheduled for a VSG on Weds, 5/2/18. I am wondering how much weight you lost, at what rate?

It seems some people lose a pound a day, others stall pretty quickly.

What has your experience been like, and what do you attribute your success or failures to?

Thanks!

I attribute my success to perseverance and not worrying about how fast, or slow, I'm losing the weight.

I am almost a year out and have lost 111 pounds, so an average of just over 2 pounds per week. I lost weight a lot faster in the beginning and much slower since about the 6 month mark. I am just a few pounds away from my goal weight. I attribute my success so far to tracking and measuring every single thing I eat and drink, getting to the gym as much as possible, and following a high protein low carb diet.

Just follow your plan as prescribed by your surgeon and it will be what it will be. Comparing yourself to others is a sure way to become frustrated. It's like asking fellow airplane passengers how much they paid for their ticket. Someone always did "better", which only serves to make you feel bad!

I only weighed once a month through the weight loss period. My losses are in my signature below.

I attribute my success to sticking to my surgeons diet in the beginning, then my own plan which I found by reading OH and trying foods which were high in protein and satisfied me. I read and post in the menu threads daily.

Some of it will depend on how much you have to lose. The heavier you are the quicker you may lose. For awhile in the beginning I lost 1-2 lbs a day. Now I lose a pound a week I think? I try to weigh every day, but with work I am often too busy in the mornings and I'm definitely not weighing at night after a full day of drinking and eating!

I haven't ever looked at my what my rate of loss was on a granular basis, so this was a fun experiment. I was 229.8lbs the day I started my Pre-Op diet and I got to goal (147lbs) in 5.5 months. So, if that's 26.58 weeks (6 months x 4.43) then I lost an average of 3.12lbs per week.

That of course includes some BIG loss during the Pre-Op and first month and then slower loss of about 2lbs per week (with some 1lbs per week) after that.

Having been on the forums for about 6 years, it seems like most people follow some variation of this pattern of loss:

  • Lots of weight lost in the first few weeks post-op (often 20lb or more, depends on start weight)
  • "Three week stall" with no loss for a week or more as the body adjusts
  • Slow and steady loss, one or two lb per week with the occasional pause-- roughly a stairstep pattern
