Scared

Hi All,

I just went to my 6 month post op appointment this past Tuesday. The dietician says I'm not eating enough calories and should now being at 6 months out be at 1200 to 1400 calories a day. I average anywhere from 800 to 1000 calories a day now and get in my 60 to 80 sometimes more grams of protein. I have been losing consitantly an average of 2 to 3 pounds a week. I'm scared that by increasing my calories that much I'll stop losing weight and also with the calories I am taking in on a daily basis I am satisfied and am not hungery. What calorie ranges are you guys eating in and if you are at 1200- 1400 are you still losing consistantly?

I think this is where I would agree to disagree with the dietician if it were me. My surgeon is in the camp that believes in a maximum of 800-1000 calories a day during the losing phase. It got me to goal in 8 months.

I'm 3.5 years out and I eat 1200 calories. I would keep doing what you're doing. What she's recommending would put you in maintenance status

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm down 76 pounds so far and still have another 70 til goal so definitely not wanting to go into maintenance mode yet.

Many people maintain on that many calories. I stayed at 600-800 calories per day until maintenance.

This is exactly what my registered dietician told me at 6 months. I gradually increased from 650-800 to around 1100 over a couple and the weight loss completely stopped. She said to be patient. I have now gone back to what I was doing, and I've started to slowly lose again. She left the practice, so I'll see what the other RD says in a couple weeks. Keep looking at the big picture. For reference, I've lost 107 pounds since last June, almost 90 since surgery in late July. I am sorry I followed her directions because I really want to take advantage of the golden first year. Listen to the experienced people on here about the losing vs maintenance phase. Some of us require fewer calories than those online calculators indicate for age, height, weight, and activity level. We would survive a famine though!

As several of the others said, 1200-1400 is maintenance for most of us (it is for me). I stayed under 800 calories until maintenance (and drop down there when my weight gets above my maintenance range now).

Although I am just a bit past 6 months, I see the bariactric doctor and nutrionist tomorrow. I am at about 900 calories a day, and still losing (although past goal).

It makes sense to me that until you are where you need/want to be in terms of health, you would not take in that many calories.

So it seems to me as long as the protein is around 80 grams, and you are doing your vitamins and fluids, you should be okay, yes?

I will be 3 years out in September and I sill only eat from 1000 - 1200 a day. I don't know about going up that high while still in the losing phase.

Had VSG on 9/28/15

Lost 161 lbs since surgery, LOST 221 lbs overall so far!!

I eat about 1200 a day (per my team) and I am still consistently losing. However, I was QUITE large when I started (378), so I am at 284 right now. I've almost lost 100 pounds. If I stop losing weight consistently or have too much of a stall, then I will adjust.

And don't get me wrong; some days I have between 700-900. It just depends on the day.

Pay attention to your body and be methodical. Graph the trend of your weight loss. Be mindful of what's going. Many people can successfully lose weight at 1400 calories, but it will be slower. Others may need to be much lower. It really depends on your body's metabolic rate. My nutritionist said that two people can eat the exact same plan/items and have different results.
