Whatcha Eating Today VSGers? Sunday, February 18, 2018
Good morning All! I hope you are having a relaxing and/or productive weekend (whatever is needed). We went to the beach yesterday - it was absolutely beautiful: sunny, warm but with a breeze, and the water was fairly warm. Today we have a grandmothers shower (children's books as the gift).
QOTD: What advice would you give to a young woman (30) who has struggled with her weight for the last 10 years but is afraid of surgery? My DD has never really had a diet that brought her to goal. She will lose perhaps 10 pounds then gain that back and more. The main approaches she has used previously were increased exercise and the Atkins diet. This time she is talking about using Jenny Craig, but I suggested that Weigh****chers might be more effective/cheaper.

Good morning! Yesterday was restful and today has been more productive. I'm at my second job, and I got in a 10 minute aerobics video when I first got here (we are pretty slow from 6 to 8am)
I finally broke my stall. I was at 309/310 for NINE days, scale finally said 302.5 today (yay!)
QOTD: Well, this is a loaded question. My first question would be how much weight does she need to lose? Many of my friends who "aren't at goal" are just slightly overweight, and the BMI charts should be taken with a grain of salt. If her BMI is over 40, I would suggest strictly following WWatchers and attending a free VSG SEMINAR for more information.
If her BMI is below 40, I would suggest to her that she needs to fit in more movement (weekly cycling class, kickboxing, daily run, etc.) and make it a habit. Rather than trying a diet, she could just make some small changes. I have BED, so this never worked for me, but it seems to be successful for some. Only water or crystal light, no white carbs, moderate whole grains, lots of lean protein, etc.
Now, this may not be a good suggestion but a co-worker of mine went on a physician monitored liquid diet for 6 months. He had between 4 and 6 protein shakes a day and took some prescribed supplements. He lost about 110 pounds in time for his wedding. Again, this would not have worked for me as I would have given up and this also would not have helped me establish healthy eating habits. He said that it really helped that he thought of his protein shakes as fuel and not food. He also had to go to his doctor once a month for labs and a checkup.

I'd guess her BMI is about 35 (definitely not over 40). Her ability to exercise is somewhat limited by arthritis, but she is a good swimmer and I've offered to pay for a membership where she could swim but she doesn't take me up on it. Truly if she stopped eating the quantity of bread she eats and cut down on alcohol she would probably lose a fair amount. BUT she doesn't really want to take my advice much (it feels like criticism to her so I try to tread lightly).

Good morning! I made great progress on my school stuff yesterday and I'm looking forward to getting out to see Black Panther today. Woo! I'm also going to spend some time bonding with my recipe software, because I finally picked up Paprika 3 and it has some snazzy new features.
QOTD: This isn't the answer you want to hear, I'm sure, but I wouldn't. None of those diets ever worked for me and I wouldn't encourage anyone to try them with that knowledge in place. The only thing I would encourage someone to do is to seek therapy and professional help for the brain part of it.

Good suggestion - I think a lot of her overeating probably comes from depression and bad modeling (when I ate my feelings).

Sadly, most all of us know what the endless cycle of yo-yo dieting leads to, and it isn't health!

Good afternoon,
Qotd I would try to help them if they asked for help and Gwen gave good advice.
B ham and cheese omelette and string cheese
L tuna, cottage cheese and cuties orange
D ribs and peas
Have a wonderful day
Good morning! Sounds like you had a lovely day Liz! The warm sun and warm ocean seems like an impossibility to me right now. The snow stopped after 24 hours of heavy dumping. I don't even know how I am going to tackle it. The cars are buried and Emmy has only a little tiny spot she can reach in the yard. I am going to have to tunnel out of the house:-) That's okay, I didn't have any plans for the day.
QOTD-This is a hard one:-) If I was asked directly for advice I would probably give some website suggestions, like Ketogenic(Diet Doctor) or Paleo. If I was asked directly about my VSG, I would offer to go with her to a seminar, hook her up with OH and lend her my VSG binder from the surgeon. Given my history with diet advice, I wouldn't say anything until I was asked. I agree with you about Weigh****chers, probably more effective than Jenny Craig and way less expensive:-)
Edited to add: I forgot to mention that I agree with Gwen about therapy. I would tell her my experience with therapy and how much it has helped.
B-Ezekiel 7 grain sprouted toast w/1tbsp almond butter

I hope everyone has a peaceful Sunday!
QOTD: Depends on the person's history. And if they ask for advice. Sometimes when I see a younger woman who is morbidly obese, I want to go up to them and tell them about WLS and what a godsend it is. Offering unsolicited advice is not a good thing in my book. First, the person has to come to the decision themselves that it's time to make a commitment to the lifestyle change needed to lose weight.
