I am new here. I have made the decision to go forward with VSG. I am in the beginning stages. The very beginning!?I have Tricare Prime and my primary dr will not FAX a referral so I will need to call and make an appt with him in order to discuss bariatric surgery. I have no clue as to if he is bariatric friendly. I am 52yrs old, 220lbs, 5'6, high BP, and I was recently put on metaprolol (sp?) for a heart that will not completely rest, Im unsure of actual diagnosis for it. -Is there anyone in my area with similar cir****tances? I would really appreciate any advice as to how to ask for referral. Thank you.

Asking for referral is generally not difficult process.

Go to the GP and say, "I would like a referral for bariatric surgery. Here are the reasons why I think it is the best choice for me." Write it down on a sheet of paper and hand it over if you need to, like if you're worried about forgetting what to say.

If you have no luck with this GP, ask your bariatric surgeon for a list of GP's s/he has worked with in the past and you may be able to find one who takes your insurance.

When my Primary didn't want to do the letter, I switched primary docs. My 2nd doctor was more than happy to write the letter. I have Diabetes and my new doc was on several boards and knew of the positives of having the surgery. BTW, I'm in College Park.

Trying to lose weight and change my lifestyle! My main goal is 220.
