Day 7: Soft Food

So! Today was Day 7, and I almost chickened out of having any soft foods. My surgeon's program has a small list of soft food that we are to slowly incorporate before seeing him at 2 weeks post op. Along with that, at the dentist I discovered I have an abcess, so I get a root canal two weeks after gut surgery. Fantastic! Anyway, I was feeling nervous.

I've read so many posts about clear liquids for weeks and purees restricted until day 21 and such that I felt like I shouldn't.

However, I followed my surgeons instructions and today, along with my protein shake and regular liquids, I had 1 ounce of lowfat laughing cow spreadable cheese in the morning and 1.5 oz. Of small curd low-fat cottage cheese with salt and pepper in the afternoon.

I ate slowly, chewed that softness a lot, and I didn't have any pain at all! I had some slight heartburn after the morning cheese (and I'm on a low dose of pantoprazole...) So I notated that for my surgeon. Does this problem happen with others? It wasn't painful so I'm not too worried, just curious and hoping it's not some sort of issue.

I'm having a scrambled egg in an hour or so, and hopefully that goes well, too.

Just a warning - scrambled eggs can be really challenging for people. I like my eggs soft, and never had a problem, but if you like them hard... they might be more challenging.

Look at the bright side. If you're going to have dental work done, what better time then when you are eating food that doesn't really need to be chewed? I've had several root canals. If your dentist is good, they aren't all that bad.

I had heartburn in the middle of the night just once, but my stomach was upset, and I had a bit of diarrhea early that day (sorry for the TMI). I was worried that I would have the dreaded GERD, but it never came back. That was weeks ago. Hopefully your heartburn was a one time thing. I used tums that night to calm things down and that was helpful. Glad tou?ve advanced. Eggs are so good. I like them scrambled. Add a little milk to wettin? them up a bit.

I've had GERD for years! It's been well managed, so it just came as a surprise. It was one of the conditions that helped me get approved, actually! While it does occur in some sleeve patients afterwards, there's a higher percentage of it being resolved in those that had it before surgery. Isn't that odd??

I called my surgeon's fellow (he has a 24 hour cell) and he said it's not uncommon. He advised tums, and one seems to do the trick almost instantly. He said my body should adjust and if it doesn't, they'd look at my meds again.

I did add skim to the egg and it was greeat! The whole thing after a soft scramble was 1.68 ounces, I finished it over a little less than 20 minutes. I know what I'm having for breakfast tomorrow! :-)

That is interesting about the GERD. That is promising! Eggs work well for me too. Actually, I tolerate pretty much everything as long as I chew and eat slow.

Same - I can tolerate anything but the KEY is to chew SLOWLY and pace yourself. I take a bit every 15 minutes or so, and by bite I mean a small bite - a LOT smaller than I used to..
I get major heartburn /discomfort if I forget and start eating fast ..I am still learning.. but getting better day by day..
I think my dog staring at me eat for so long puts pressure on me .. either I eat it or I am pressured to share..

Good luck!

Unless your GERD was the result of a hernia, and the hernia was repaired during VSG surgery, I believe you have been misinformed by your surgeon. :/

Oh, no, that was something I read in a medical journal. I just tried to find it (I couldn't, of course) but something like 17% had it resolved or better controlled with PPIs afterwards in the study, something like 9% had worsening symptoms.

Honestly, I really didn't want the malabsportion with DS or Bypass. I know Bypass is sometimes the better choice for people with GERD. My surgeon did discuss it with me. Also, a family friend died after having the bypass a few years ago (uncommon, I know)...i just really felt that the sleeve was right for me.

I'm hoping it either resolves or is well controlled with meds and diet! If not...well, I'll tackle that beast when I get to it. :-)
