I am 6 days post op and having trouble keeping my protein and fluids down due to what my doc called excessive weight loss they put a pickline in. Is this common practice?

btw wieght loss was 23 pounds in 6 days.

Yes, this means they are going to give you intravenous feedings through TPN (total parenteral nutrition), and possible IV hydration if you can't drink. I've taken care of a patient that had to have this. My surgical team also let me know that it was a possibility for their patients that could not get there nutrition/fluids in. Sorry you are going through this.

Thank you for replying. I feel better knowing that these things happen as I have tried and tried to taken the things I need after surgery.

No problem. Some folks get a little more swollen inside than others and can't tolerate liquids. Things should get better soon.

I didn't have to have this done, but did have a very difficult time getting fluids in post surgery and ended up in the ER to get IVs to re-hydrate.

I've heard it's very common - my surgeon said something like 30% of sleeve patients have to have this done.

Hang in there... sounds like you're in good care.

Thank you so much! It turns out my esophagus is still so swollen from surgery even at my 2 and a half week mark that I'm unable to swallow thick liquids or medium small sips. Also explains my pain when eating.
