3 days out need advice!

Hey guys!

I'm 3 days out. Had surgery 12/1. I'm feeling pretty decent considering. Today I was able to drink all but 1 or 2 oz of a premier protein drink in alittle over an hour. Is that normal? It didn't really hurt and over all made me feel better. I'm really concerned about getting dehydrated. But I don't want to over fill my little tummy.

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Hi. Congratulations on your surgery. You will be able to drink a fair bit despite you little tummy. Make sure you are drinking water as well as your other liquids.

Glad you are feeling well.

Yes, fluids will go down fast and easy for some. I am about 9 weeks out and at first I thought there might be something wrong as I could drink almost 10 oz of a 12 oz yogurt drink. I thought maybe my surgeon had left my new stomach a bit too large. You will encounter more restriction as you progress to pureed and then soft foods. By the time you get to regular food, you will be convinced at how small you new tummy really is.

My advice, take each new food verrrry slowly and pause between bites, since your nerves were cut, going from not full to very full can be a single bite.

I had pretty much no restriction with premier protein drinks. I finished them in about 10 minutes. Then I would come on here and see people talking about how it took them hours to drink one. I seriously thought there was something wrong with my sleeve. My restriction came later. Everybody is different.

Thinking about this more, I need to revise my reply to you. At three days out I was still in the hospital and barely able to drink a medicine cup of water. Once I graduated to Premier (at two weeks out) it was very easy to drink.

I was able to drink pretty effortlessly immediately. If you feel any discomfort this should definitely que you to slow down. My team had me do the medicine cup method the 1st few days. I drank 1 medicine cup of fluid every 5 to 10 mins to ensure I wasn't drinking to fast or slow. I set my timer on my phone so I wouldn't get behind.

When I saw my nut at 2 weeks post op I asked her about this, and she said as long as I was tolerating I could drink to my comfort level, but she said no gulping. Small frequent sips are okay.

Liquids will go right through your sleeve. As long as you are taking tiny sips over the course of that hour, you should be just fine!

Add me to the "never had problems with liquids" group. Consider yourself lucky as this will make it easier to avoid dehydration!

Do some reading about your pyloric valve. There is a very good post by a long time user named frisco (not sure if he is still around), but he spent the time to do some research and distill it down to an easy to understand post. For some of us liquids go through the pyloric valve a bit more easily. This is why the advise "don't drink your calories" and why so many of us gain the weight back once we start drinking alcohol again.

Here is the link to that post:

If frisco is still around be sure to say thanks to him for the work!
