Just to clarify, I was not trying to argue with anyone. I have never heard of anesthesia causing this issue and I felt this was more of a back and forth discussion.

It's called telogen effluvium and is basically your body going "OMG I'M DYING, YOU DON'T NEED HAIR WHEN YOU'RE DYING." So the body conserves energy it would spend on hair on more useful things. :)

I understand what it is. I just never heard anyone say it is from anesthesia. My doctor and other people who have been through this all said it is from losing weight rapidly, stress and trauma to the body. I don't associate anesthesia as stress to the body. I see it more as the cutting and removal of part of your stomach.

It certainly can be a source of stress to the body :)

I have been through it also,several times in fact.

anesthesia is a huge stress on the body.

Rapid weight loss from, say, a teenager who thought they would lose lots of weight by eating a fruit only diet,does cause hair loss. I actually was working in a dermatologist office and this above mentioned girl came in ,having lost every hair on her head from a fruit only diet.

when anesthesia is given,the heart and lungs are medically stopp d. The ventilator that is attached to your body through the endotracheal tube is what the anesthiologist uses to manually keep you alive during surgery. You are put into a terrifically deep coma so you won't feel pain.

I took it. Holy hell it wrecked me. For whatever reason it impacted my kidneys- I had pain, a humungous amount of water retention, joints ached, etc. I stopped taking it and went back to the doc and they said it couldn't be from the meds. Symptoms did resolve shortly after stopping the meds. So per docs orders, I restarted with the same side effects. This time I kept taking it up until the 2 week follow up and I was a total mess- they immediately took me off of it. Symptoms again resolved. My internist warned me that it could very well result in losing the gallbladder later in, but that the side effects in my case were far worse than losing some of the gallbladder protection. He was right about the gallbladder- had that out about a few years after surgery.

EDITED to add: I should mention though I have a long history of meds totally messing with me. One of my chemo drugs also produced wonky side effects. The oncologist didn't think it could be from the drug (my eye felt like somebody squeezing a grape hard enough to squi**** not a typical side effect). He as a precaution tested me to see if I was in the therapeutic range guessing I was not-- I was on a very low dose and I am a super tall chic and way above average woman size. Anyway, long story short I was out of the therapeutic range- way to high and was on way too much. Doc coined the term "supermetabolizer"- he didn't hardly have many patients like me, but I just don't metabolize drugs in the predictable manner. The urisodol was before this incident, but given my history with so many different drugs being problematic it could totally just be my system and not something all would experience for sure. Take it. If you have problems talk with your doc. Hardly anyone has problems with it- I am on the "rare exception" end of the spectrum.

Wow! Crazy! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences. Really teaches you to trust your gut when you know something is not right with your body. I'm taking it, & hoping I won't have any bad reactions.

The biggest complaint I've heard about ursodiol or actigall was that people still got gallstones and had to get another surgery. It's just very common to develop them with extreme dietary changes. I was lucky though, for my surgeon removes the gallbladder and appendix as a precaution.

Ursodiol made me nauseous so I only took it for a few days. That was 9 years ago. I still have my gallbladder.
