Question - liquid protein drinks

Our bodies can get a little out of whack immediately after surgery. Some foods just don't sit well, and that's totally normal; it often gets better after a few months.

I did a lot of unflavored protein powder in different kinds of broth. Cold liquids made me terribly sick, if I remember right, and I had good luck with powdered protein in beef broth. Try lots of things, and hopefully you'll find something you can work with!

So sorry you're having problems. Everyone gave you great advice here. Trying different shakes, powders and temperatures. Also call dr office too and speak to nutritionist. Maybe it's too much too soon.

I can't do any of the sweet shakes, pre-made or powder. I tried all the flavors (that was expensive) and finally settled on isopure unflavored powder. No sweeteners and I add it to gravy, broth, LF or FF soups and things like cottage cheese, etc. 1 scoop has 110 cals, 0 carbs, 0 fats and 26 grams of protein + whatever you are putting it in.

I think it was Cappy/Carol who said she'd put a scoop of unflavored protein powder in a small bowl each morning and add a little bit to everything she ate during the day (when she was in the early food stages). This way she'd get that extra protein in as the day went on. I always thought that was a clever idea.

That is an excellent idea. Bump the protein for very few cals. Thank you for re-sharing.

It does sound a lot like dumping. Most protein powders are low carb, but you should definitely read the labels. If you are using one with a lot of sugar (and some body builder proteins have a lot) then you likely experienced dumping (it happens more with RNY patients than VSG, but it has happened to me when I drank a baby drinkable yogurt just outside of clear liquids and I almost wrecked my car).

Low carb sweeteners (Stevia, Splenda, Erythritol, Xylitol, etc.) should not cause this. I would look at the other ingredients too. Just because they are protein powders and we assume they are healthy doesn't mean they don't put other junk in them too.

My radar would be on whey or sweetener, too. You may want to see how egg protein treats you.

For some reason, I really couldn't tolerate the Premier shakes after surgery, either, but I drank them regularly before surgery. They mostly just bother me because they're too sweet, but if I drink them straight up, my gut gets a bit unhappy. I'm able to tolerate them mixed half and half with Fairlife milk. Not sure what's in them that is the culprit. At my current stage, I'm mostly able to avoid them altogether as I'm getting plenty of protein without them. One of the things I like to do is make a protein smoothie with yoghurt, FL milk, peanut butter powder and fruit. Ends up pretty high in protein and tastes pretty good, too.
