Multivitamins!

The only thing that worked for me was time and consistency. I hated my chewable bariatric vitamins so much that I would crush them to a powder, spoon them far back on my tongue, then swig water to rinse it down. I still tasted it, but I didn't keep tasting it due to residue being stuck in my teeth. At about 4 months of taking them twice a day like that, I realized that weren't as awful as I thought they were before. Now I can chew them with a few crunches and wash them down with water. So much easier than crushing.

You do something long enough, you get used to it.

Yeah I had to go through some experimentation on this too. Some upset my stomach, others made me sneeze!

my B12 is a sublingual. And you can get vitamin d as a mouth spay. I haven't tried the patch yet, they don't work for everyone, but might be worth exploring.

keep trying. From everyone who's posted about it, vitamin deficiency is no joke. Sorry you're struggling with it.

good luck.

I had surgery last Thursday October 5th. I am using the patch just for my multi vitamin. I notice not many people use them. My question is if everyone hates vitamins why don't more people use the patch? I am worried that the patch might not work for me, and I don't want to use them for months only to find out I risk putting myself at risk.

I think there are a few reasons for this.

  • The patch isn't widely available. You can get vitamin pills at any grocery or drugstore, but the patches need to be ordered online.

  • Not a lot of doctors are aware of the vitamin patches, and don't pass that information along to patients as an option.

  • Patches are generally more expensive than pills. I can get a two-month supply of Centrum for $10, whereas one month of patches costs $20. If you're on multiple supplements (iron, calcium, etc.) as well, it can really add up.

  • Some people don't absorb vitamins well with the patch, and you can't really discover that until you have blood work done.

My surgeon states no pills after surgery either. He states all meds must be crushable, chewable, or liquid. I'm like you, the taste of chewables are horrid. I was thinking a liquid multivitamin supplement. Centrum makes one, and then you can just take it back with medicine cup and be done with it! This is what I'm considering. Just google liquid multivitamins.

You are early out, just know it will get better with time. Something you can't stand the taste of may taste fine later.

I use the patches and for the most part feel I have had good results. With any vitamin you need to check your labs.

Flintstones were suggested 20 years ago when options for multivitamins (especially chewable) were minimal and bariatric nutrition was not a practice. They also said to take Tums for calcium back then, too. The fact that your surgeon's office is still recommending children's vitamins demonstrates their continued ignorance and refusal to update their knowledge on bariatric nutrition. Flintstones are for kids. Their formula is to meet children's needs, and lacking nutrients that adults need. Do NOT take this outdated and insufficient advice.

Not sure if there is a multi out there like this or not, but I have a vitamin B deficiency so I have to take that everyday. They recommended the sublingual dissolveable kind. They were awful! I ended up finding a liquid version, with a dropper. You just squirt it under your tongue, leave for 30 seconds and then swallow. Much better than the chewable!

I have I have been blending my multi into my morning smoothie. I swear I can't taste it! It's the only way I can stomach them. I've tried 4 different chewables and thrown up because of the strong taste & smell.
