Dairy Intolerance -recipe/meal idea's

I've always been a dairy eater. At two weeks post op I became dairy intolerant. Not even lactose free milk is and option for me now. No whey protein shakes. I am using pea protein for now while I figure this out.

Please share dairy free meal or recipe idea's. Being able to eat a variety is important for me to not have food boredom to tackle on top of the current struggle to get all my protein in without whey shakes. Any recommended blogs, cookbooks, people that.may be a resource on this topic that you like?

I love dairy, so I am sorry you have an intolerance! I believe I have read of people who have it and then it goes away maybe a year later, so have hope!

You can eat tons and tons of protein without dairy. How about:

Shrimp with thai curry sauce (does coconut milk upset you?)

Grilled chicken with low-sugar bbq sauce

Ground turkey with taco seasoning and a tiny bit of guacamole

World According to Eggface egg bites - you can add onions and peppers, or bacon and chives, or crab and artichoke

Steak! Just season with salt and pepper

Pork chops

Deli meat (turkey or ham or salami, whatever you like) with a dill pickle

Turkey or beef meatloaf with sautéed veggies added

Crockpot chili!

Honestly, when you are eating 3-4 ounces of food per meal, you can keep it pretty simple. No need to get super fancy, just grill or saute or bake some meat, and you're good to go. I often make a side baked potato for my BF - easy peasy.

Good luck!

Thank you for the ideas! I can do coconut milk and other nut milks just fine for now. Was mostly using dairy to boost the protein intake.

Unfortunately the steaks sounds delicious but I'm not allowed beef until 4 months post op. I know what I'm having for Christmas dinner already! LOL

I hope it goes away too!

I ate a lot of chicken for the first few months, and pretty much every kind of sauce I could get my hands on. The marinade aisle at Safeway was my second home! Check out the sauce aisle and the pre-mixed seasoning bottles in the baking aisle.

Some of the stuff I used:

  • Salad dressing
  • Spaghetti sauce
  • BBQ sauce
  • Curry bricks
  • Chinese stir-fry sauce
  • Fajita seasoning
  • White chili seasoning
  • Hot wing sauce
  • Lemon pepper marinade
  • Green salsa
  • Enchilada sauce
  • Cajun seasoning
  • Gravy mix

I eat eggs everyday. I'm pretty sure they are the most perfect food!

I actually prefer the pea protein.

Almost all my meals are dairy free. I typically make meals with a flow chart, because 1) I am lazy and 2) I am frequently stumped

I pick a protein:
a) tofu
b) chicken b.
c) chicken t.
d) pork loin
e) salmon
f) tilapia
g) lamb
h) duck

I pick a fat (skip butter and ghee if desired):
a) butter
b) ghee
c) olive oil
d) almond or other nut oil
e) sesame oil
f) coconut oil
g) lard (I eat higher-fat)

I pick a spice:

a) 5 spice
b) harissa
c) curry
d) italian
e) greek
f) togarashi
g) ras el hanout
h) Fox Pointe Seasoning
i) rosemary/lemon/garlic mix

This is the basic format. I basically can make all sorts of stuff. For instance:

lamb + greek + olive oil + side (usually spinach)= shawarma

pork + italian + butter + broccoli = italian porn chops

harissa + chicken + diced jicama and scallions = tasty

duck + curry + coconut oil + coconut milk + peppers, snow peas = curry

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

Forgot to add, lots of good non-dairy yogurt options, too. Also check out the vegan stuff for sour cream, cheese, etc, if you want. Some is carby, though, and very processed.

You can also make cheese from nuts if you feel industrious. Or rather, a cheese-like substance.

for protein I use unflavored soy milk with half an avacado, half a banana and a whole egg blended in a bullet. I add whey protein to this, but you could use one of the vegan varieties if they are tasteless.

Pureed foods
Stag chili with beans, plus a generous dollop of refried beans to thicken
Any brand of vegetable soup with two table spoons of Classic hummus to thicken
Tinned chicken breast, tinned diced tomatoes, refried beans, beef broth
Pork adabo with the fat skimmed off, hummus to thicken
Cottage cheese, tinned chicken breast, diced tomato and hummus

Ampalaya (bitter gourd) and eggs, hummus or refried beans to thicken

These are things I can make quickly from the cupboard or fridge. I try to use what my wife has cooked and add refried beans to thicken, or beef broth to moisten. This morning I blended a soft boiled egg with some chili and it was great.

My sister is vegan and had a VSG in July. She has been able to manage the protein requirements and stick to a vegan diet, so you're ahead of the game if you're not vegan, but simply dairy intolerant. My sister makes smoothies with tofu, soy milk and peanut powder (plus any other stuff she wants for flavor) and those turn out pretty high in protein.
