I never took anything but normal Tylenol and I only took that once while in the hospital and a couple times at home.

Okay good. I thought there would be a lot more pain. I was concerned for a bit.

I had to pick up a bunch of meds too just like you. I took them for the belly discomfort for about two days after surgery. I've had a c-section surgery and Lap-Band surgery and my VSG surgery was a lot harder of a recovery for me. But, I also had the Band removed, the VSG, a hiatal hernia repair and a liver biopsy done. My post surgical gas pains were so intense. I had it not only in my shoulders, but my entire back and extreme discomfort of one arm. So, I used the liquid pain reliever to help take the edge off the pain in my back and arm but it resolved after a full week and I no longer took the pain meds. I still have half a bottle of it in my fridge.

Yeah I'm concerned It will be rough for me too. I have this thing where I get very sore all over my body even on a good day. I swear I have fibromyalgia!

I have no idea why, but my surgeon wrote me a whole bunch of prescriptions my last visit and said that I had to pick them up within 7 days (even though surgery is not until 11/7). Anyways he wrote for liquid Tylenol with codeine). Seems a mild pain killer for such a drastic surgery. What do you think? As a nurse, most of my patients in the past haven't been too impressed with this for pain. Do you all think this will cover my pain?

the incisions are about an inch long and cause most ppl little pain. Muscle pain can be more painful for some and you will likely feel no pain from the bypass itself.

Many do just fine on Tylenol with codeine. If you don't you will have to can't act your surgeon then, and ask for a stronger med.

Wow! My incisions were about half a cm, nowhere near an inch long!

Of course, pain is relative. It depends a lot on individual tolerance. However, lap procedures are typically less painful and have far quicker recovery. I didn't even take the codeine at home and had asked them to stop even the narcotics the day before I was discharged because I had no pain. However, I have a freakish tolerance to pain and take no painkillers, OTC or otherwise, and I need a knee replacement. Everyone is different, and it is good to have options if needed :)

Don't get me wrong - I wasn't comfortable, but I also wasn't in pain. I had 1" lap incisions plus a 3" one where the stomach was removed, however I also had a BMI of almost 80 surgery day, so I was larger than most. Still way easier than any open surgery ever.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

And hey, if you ever don't know why a doctor is prescribing you something, you should ask the doctor for clarification!
