Extreme pain after surgery
So I had my surgery Tuesday, September 19th and the doctor said everything went great. I was supposed to get discharged yesterday but I was having a lot of trouble drinking fluids and my pain levels were between 7-9. I was finally able to get discharged this afternoon but I have really bad pains every time I take a sip of water. It's mostly in my chest then I burp right after.
Does anyone else have any tips or trick?

Hey there, I wish I had some great advice to help with the spasm and pain after drinking, but unfortunately the only thing that worked for me was small sips and grittin my teeth. I'm 6 days out and it does get better. Still happens but not as intense.
Best wishes , and I feel your pain
Vertical sleeve, Sept 15
Thank you!

Do you have acid reflux? That reminds me of me after my sleeve. If its not dying down by day 14 i would call the dr.

I had mine on Monday and I have found that there are a few things that help me. I have been doing GasX strips pretty regularly and they help some. I am also alternating ondansetron and hyoscyamine. The thing that is really incredibly helpful is just getting up and moving. Also, sitting up fairly straight when you're drinking gives you a nice gravity assist that might be of value to you.
Day 1 of drinking was the hardest and the first couple of hours were pretty difficult, but if you keep at it, it does get better. One of the tricks they gave me in the hospital was to use 30 ml plastic medicine cups and to fill them up with fluid. Having a tiny cup to drink out of naturally encourages you to take smaller sips and it also gives you a goal as you should try to get 4-6 of them in per hour when awake.
Thank you all for the good advice. I have my VSG surgery next Friday and I am avidly reading through all of your comments to be as prepared as possible. I know everyone is different, but at least I will have an idea of what I might have to deal with.
Thanks again!

Try sucking on some ice chips instead of swallowing. I had the same issue with swallowing after my surgery but I know I needed to get fluids in so I just gritted my teeth and did it. It will get better every day, just keep trying!
My pain wasn't as severe as yours, but I was having pain when drinking. I got a shot glass to put my water in, and took REALLY TINY sips. It would be 20 or so sips to get the shot glass down. That kept me from getting those pains. I gradually was able to take slighly bigger sips as my sleeve learned how to manage it. I also made protein drink popsicles (syntrax lemonade) and those made it easier to get fluids down in the very early days.
good luck!
